Graphic Novel Series presents Howard Cruse
University Park, PAThe University Libraries' continuing Graphic Novel Speaker Series presents "Comix, Closets, and Life: Gay Cartoonist Howard Cruse Talks about Stuck Rubber Baby, Wendel and their
Funny Book Roots," on Monday, April 21, 7 p.m. in the Foster Auditorium, 101 Pattee Library. A book signing will follow. Books will be available for purchase. Cruse’s work can be viewed at www.howardcruse.com.
Howard Cruse’s comic strips and humorous illustrations have appeared in Playboy, The Village Voice, The Advocate and numerous other national magazines. His cartooning first gained nation-wide attention in the 1970s when he began drawing his Barefootz stories for underground comics publications. In the late 1970s he began editing Gay Comix, a new anthology featuring comics by openly gay and lesbian cartoonists. In 1983 he introduced his comic strip Wendel, a strip about a rebellious and idealistic gay man, to the pages of The Advocate. Five books have been published compiling Cruse’s own comic strips and stories from underground comics.
Cruse’s critically acclaimed graphic novel, Stuck Rubber Baby, was published in 1995 by Paradox Press, a division of DC Comics. German, French, Italian and Spanish language editions of the book were also published. A finalist for both an American Library Association Gay/Lesbian Fiction Award and a Lambda Literary Award, Stuck Rubber Baby was the winner of Eisner and Harvey Awards as well a United Kingdom Comic Art Award and a British Comics creators Guild Award.
The presentation is sponsored by the Tschan Fund, The Charles W. Mann Jr. Lecture in the Book Arts, the Pennsylvania Center for the Book, the LGBTA Student Resource Center and Library Learning Services.
