First Thursday State College continues May 1

University Park, PA—First Thursday State College will continue its celebration of the arts on May 1, with exhibits, performances, and activities at locations throughout downtown State College and the Penn State campus. Parking is free that evening at all municipal street meters, the parking lots on Fraser Street and on Beaver Avenue and Allen Street (across from Municipal Building), and the McAllister parking deck. Participating venues will be marked by sidewalk posters. (Unless marked by an asterisk, all events are free and open to the public.)

Events for May include:

The Artisan Connection
5-8 p.m.: *Engler Glass - Works by Dylan and Amy Engler whose focus is creating functional and decorative glass for use in the home, using bright colors and imaginative designs. Engler Glass has been a juried artist in the Central PA Festival of the Arts for the past two years and has created a loyal and local following. Visit the store for a look at these western Pennsylvania glass artists - 135 East Beaver Avenue.

The Creative Oasis:

5:30-7 p.m.: Demonstrations of wheel-thrown and hand-built pottery-133 East Beaver Avenue.

Growing Tree Toys:

5:30–7:30 p.m.: Make Your Own Mothers Day Cards—Children ages 4 and up can use our cool, colorful pop-out designs to make customized cards for the important people in their life for Mothers Day! Meet us at Growing Tree Toys 202 South Allen Street.

Happy Valley Optical:

5-7  p.m.: Exhibition of Artwork by Betty Hart – 208 South Allen Street.

Penn State University Libraries:
4:30 p.m.: Gallery Talk for  exhibit, "Hemingway Writing Home: Letters to His Family 1917-1957," by Sandra S. Spanier, Penn State professor of English and general editor of the Hemingway Letters Project, and Verna Kale, Ph.D. candidate in English-104 Paterno Library.
 
Exhibits:
8 a.m.-9 p.m.
"Anyone Would Have Done That: The Rescue of the 13 Jews from Ergoldsbach," on display to August 22-the Diversity Studies Room, 109 Pattee Library.

8 a.m.-6:30 p.m.
"Hemingway Writing Home: Letters to His Family 1917-1957," on display through May 30 -104 Paterno Library.

Penn State School of Music:

12:10 p.m.: Bach's Lunch- Horn Studio - Chamber Music-Eisenhower Chapel, University Park.

* 8:00 p.m.: Symphonic Band - Eisenhower Auditorium, University Park, tickets $8/$4, available at the Eisenhower Ticket Center [814-863-0255 or 1-800-ARTS-TIX] or online at http://www.cpa.psu.edu.

Schlow Centre Region Library

7-p.m.: Arietta - a 20-voice women's chorale and the official outreach ensemble of the State College Choral Society will perform selection from European music.
