New information literacy award for undergraduates

University Park, PA— The University Libraries have created an information literacy award for the Undergraduate Exhibition on April 9, 2008. All undergraduates from any Penn State campus who submit posters to the exhibition will be eligible to enter, and stand a chance to win a cash prize. The award will be given to entries that demonstrate excellence in information literacy through either bibliography or literature reviews contributing to research in any field, or through the use of primary resources to conduct original research. First prize is $150, second prize is $125, and third is $100.

During the exhibition, judges from the University Libraries will review the posters and speak briefly with entrants about their information gathering processes; no special preparation is required. (Students who do not wish to be considered for the award should tell the judges at that time.) Judging of the posters will be based on the following:

  • Credit and proper citation for any quotes, tables, graphs, photographs, and other content used in the poster that are not the student's own work
  • Information on critical sources used, as space allows in the poster
  • Information research process and strategies
  • Social, ethical, or economic considerations in accessing information
  • Relationship of the background information gathered to the project direction

In addition, students may display supporting materials (including bibliographies and literature reviews) on a limited tabletop space available to each entrant. Students will also be able to discuss their information research process with the judges.

The deadline is March 7. For more information on the Undergraduate Exhibition, and on the Information Literacy and other Awards available, see http://www.undergradresearch.psu.edu/exhibition/. For further details, please contact lls11@psulias.psu.edu.
