University Park, PA The University Libraries are offering a new article delivery service for Penn State faculty this semester. The service provides faculty with electronic copies of articles from the print journal collections at their local campus libraries, at no charge. This new service will be a time saver for faculty who no longer have to visit the Libraries in person to retrieve and copy articles from print journals. Access Services Assistant Head Barbara Coopey says faculty will appreciate the convenience of the new service.
"For example, a faculty member in Sparks Building can request a copy of an article from a print journal in Pattee Library, and we will scan and send out the electronic copy," she says.
Coopey notes that many faculty are accustomed to receiving similar services at other universities. "A survey of CIC consortial institutions in December 2007 revealed that all offer some kind of delivery service for faculty and six of the thirteen institutions offer an article delivery service for free," she adds.
In addition, faculty can use Article Delivery Service to request copies of articles from print journal collections from other Penn State campuses. A new ILLiad Web interface has been designed to maximize the speed and efficiency of this service. To request articles from print journals in local or Penn State campus Libraries collections, users should select the new article request form under "Request Items Owned by Penn State Libraries" on the Main Menu. To speed up processing, users can add a call number and choose the library location where the journal is located, and the request will be automatically directed to staff at that location. A link “Search the CAT” is available to verify call number and library location. These articles will be posted to the faculty's ILLiad account.
Existing Interlibrary, "I Want It," and EZBorrow loan services remain unchanged, and faculty will continue to pick up their books and other items at their selected pickup library locations. Since 2002, Penn State faculty, staff and students have used ILLiad, the resource sharing request management software, to place article and book requests for material not available at Penn State, for annexed materials and for articles not available at the user’s local campus library. Users choose from twenty-nine pickup locations for books. Articles are posted electronically to their ILLiad accounts. To log on to ILLiad, go to https://ill.libraries.psu.edu/.
