Libraries Exhibit Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. and Black History Month

University Park, PA -- "Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. and Black History Month," an exhibit featuring eighteen posters designed by Penn State students and a selection of prints from the Penn State University Libraries' collection of historical Black Experience posters, will be on display in the Pattee Library exhibit area January 10 through March 4, 2002.

The student posters were created in Lanny Sommese's Art 470, Time and Sequence course. Judges from the commemoration planning committee selected art student Erik Baxter's poster to represent the 2002 theme "A Single Garment of Destiny."

His work appears on the posters, buttons, and pamphlets being used to promote Penn State's Martin Luther King Jr. Day Commemoration activities being held January 15–22, 2002. For a complete schedule of University Park campus activities, go to: www.equity.psu.edu/mlk/.

The other posters in the exhibit are selections from the Libraries' collection, begun in the 1960s when the Libraries joined with other University departments to produce posters and displays celebrating Black History Month (previously Black Experience Month) during the month of February.
