Rare Portrait of General James Beaver on display at State Museum of Pennsylvania

University Park, PA -- Since May 2000, a rare oil portrait of Civil War General James Beaver, from the collection of the Penn State University Archives, has been on display at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) has received permission to keep the portrait on display for another year.

General Beaver, a Bellefonte native, served as Pennsylvania governor and president of Penn State's Board of Trustees in the late 1800s to early 1900s. Beaver Stadium, built in 1893 as Beaver Field, was named after him.

Before the portrait was featured in the State Museum of Pennsylvania, it received preservation treatment using joint funds from the Penn State University Archives endowment fund, the Penn State University Libraries preservation fund, and the State Museum of Pennsylvania.

The portrait and related archival materials, from the University Archives' collection, are part of the exhibit "Generals to Governors," located in the Civil War Gallery on the second floor of the museum.
