Libraries Provide Equal Access to the News

University Park, PA -- The University Libraries' News and Microforms Library now has three televisions broadcasting news coverage. Closed-captioning is provided for persons with hearing impairments and sound is provided for persons with vision impairments.

This addition to the library's extensive print and microform collections complements the nearby Library Services for Persons with Disabilities offerings—including screen-reading software that provides digital access to news. This service recently helped a journalism student complete daily reading assignments. In addition, the News and Microforms Library, located on the ground floor of Pattee Library, west, is wheelchair accessible and provides comfortable seating and study space.

Enhancements to the library were coordinated by new head Debora Cheney (also head of the Social Sciences Library and Foster Communications Librarian) as well as Ann Thompson and the rest of the staff of the library. Funding was provided by the University Libraries.
