Fred Waring television show on PBS

University Park, PA—A special five-part series of The Fred Waring Television Show will premiere Saturday, August 2, 2008, at 7 p.m., on WPSU-TV, Penn State Public Broadcasting. The series will continue to air each consecutive Saturday at 7:00 pm through August 30.waring in the CBS studio

Fred Waring—band leader, music publisher, entrepreneur and personification of patriotism, whose legendary show choir and orchestra, the Pennsylvanians, dominated radio and the concert stage throughout the Big Band era, was also a pioneer in television. This five-part series of the classic Fred Waring Television Show debuting on WPSU-TV, features the music of some of the most famous songwriters of the 20th century – Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, George M. Cohan, Hoagy Carmichael and Gus Kahn. Fred Waring had warm friendships with many of the great composers of this era, and at their request, introduced more new songs to the world than anyone.

This special series of The Fred Waring Television Show is a showcase for the Pennsylvanians performing the timeless music of the great American songbook as well as a memorable representation of the golden age of early television. These stirring performances are sure to inspire and delight viewers of all ages.

Fred Waring's America is part of Penn State's Special Collections Library and is located in 313 Pattee Library, west. The historical memorabilia reflects Waring's nearly 70-year career as a bandleader, choral conductor, glee club pioneer, music educator, golf tournament host and entrepreneur.
