BEILSTEIN/GMELIN AND SciFINDER SCHOLAR DOWNLOADING INSTRUCTIONS

Beilstein (organic chemistry) and Gmelin (inorganic and organometallic chemistry) are two large handbook series that began publication in Germany in the late 1700s. The online versions are in English and provide a wealth of properties data. Beilstein also has reaction data as well.

These are client-based databases, and versions are available for Penn State Mac and PC users. In order to access them, you must install the client Commander software on your computer. To download Commander, please contact Nan Butkovich at njb2@psu.edu or by phone at 814-865-3716.

If you are not affiliated with Penn State, you can go to http://www.mdl.com to obtain information about subscribing to these databases.

SciFinder-Scholar Download Instructions

SciFinder Scholar provides online access to Chemical Abstracts (1907-present), Medline, the CA Registry File, CAS Reacts, and ChemCats. It includes indexing for over 21 million articles from over 8,000 journals, patents from 38 patent-granting agencies worldwide, information on over 42 million chemical substances, and over 6 million chemical reactions.

This is a client-based database and is available to Penn State Mac and PC users. Go to https://downloads.its.psu.edu to get the software; it's located under the "Technical Applications" option. Be certain to download ALL the files for the version that you will need.

You will also need the VPN software, which is available at https://downloads.its.psu.edu under "Connecting to Penn State". After installing, run the software; you'll need to select the LIAS VPN setting (it's the last option on the list).

MOST COMMON INSTALLATION PROBLEM: People often appear to load the software correctly, but they then get an error message saying that they are "unable to connect to CAS server." This is caused by not downloading the site file at all or by placing it in the wrong directory. There is a simple fix. Just check and be sure that you've installed the site file correctly.
Please check the system requirements from CAS.

If you are not affiliated with Penn State, you can go to http://www.cas.org to get information on how to subscribe to SciFinder Scholar.
