LIBRARY UPDATE (Web Edition)
FEBRUARY 2005
Welcome to the PAMS LIBRARY UPDATE. PAMS is the acronym
for the new Physical and Mathematical Sciences Library at University
Park. PAMS Library Update provides information about the collections
and services offered by the PAMS Library. It is distributed via e-mail
to the departments of Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, Mathematics,
Statistics, and Chemical Engineering, and faculty in the University
Libraries.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Nan Butkovich
(njb2@psu.edu, 814/ 865-3716) or
Bob Seeds (rss5@psu.edu, 814/ 865-3714)
or stop by our offices in the Physical and Mathematical Sciences Library
in 201 Davey Lab.
The PAMS Library will close at 5pm on Saturday, 5 March. This will
allow work crews to install new furniture, move and install shelving,
move journal and reference collections, and install light fixtures
in the newly completed second phase of our multiphase project.
When we reopen at noon on Sunday, 13 March, the side of the library
facing Chandlee Lab will be open for use. This area will provide some
quiet study space as well as house the bound journals collection and
the reference collection. At the same time construction will begin
on the side facing Osmond Lab.
During the week that we are closed, we realize that some of you may
need to have access to parts of the collection. If you do please contact
the PAMS Library circulation desk at 865-7617, Nan Butkovich (njb2@psu.edu)
at 865-3716, or Bob Seeds (rss5@psu.edu)
at 865-3714 to make arrangements to obtain the information that you
need. If you have any questions beforehand, please feel free to contact
either Nan or Bob.
Spring break hours for other units of the University Libraries are
available on the Web at http://www.libraries.psu.edu/hours/.
The American Institute of Physics has added backfiles to the electronic
versions of the following journals. The date after each title indicates
the year that the backfile begins.
Applied Physics Letters (1962)
Journal of Applied Physics (1931)
Journal of Chemical Physics (1933)
Journal of Mathematical Physics (1960)
Physics of Fluids (1958)
Physics of Plasmas (1958)
Review of Scientific Instruments (1930)
Chaos (1991)
You can access these journals via The CAT ( http://cat.libraries.psu.edu)
or from the LIAS A-Z list at http://www.lias.psu.edu/alall.html.
Science of Synthesis is the new edition of the Houben-Weyl Methods
in Organic Chemistry, a major reference work that provides synthetic
methods for the preparation of organic chemicals. The original edition
began publication in 1909 and covers the organic chemistry literature
back to 1835. All editions of Houben-Weyl as well as the E-Series
are also included as an electronic backfile within Science of Synthesis.
Please note that the earlier editions of Houben-Weyl are in German.
You can access Science of Synthesis and Houben-Weyl from the LIAS
A-Z List at http://www.lias.psu.edu/alall.html.
WARNING! CAREFULLY READ THE FOLLOWING:
ALTHOUGH THE SCIENCE OF SYNTHESIS HAS BEEN WRITTEN BY EXPERTS, THE
CUSTOMER AND ANY EMPLOYEES, AGENTS AND CONSULTANTS OF THE CUSTOMER
(THE “USER”) WHO USE THE SCIENCE OF SYNTHESIS ARE HEREBY
ADVISED AND ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE THAT THE HANDLING OF CHEMICALS,
MICROORGANISMS, AND CHEMICAL APPARATUS CARRIES POTENTIALLY LIFE-THREATENING
RISKS. FOR EXAMPLE, SERIOUS DANGERS COULD OCCUR THROUGH QUANTITIES
BEING INCORRECTLY GIVEN. THE AUTHORS TOOK THE UTMOST CARE THAT THE
QUANTITIES AND EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS DESCRIBED HEREIN REFLECTED THE
CURRENT STATE OF THE ART OF SCIENCE WHEN THE WORK WAS PUBLISHED. HOWEVER,
THE AUTHORS, EDITORS, AND PUBLISHERS TAKE NO REPONSIBILITY AS TO THE
CORRECTNESS OF THE CONTENT. FURTHER, SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE IS CONSTANTLY
CHANGING, AS NEW INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE, THE CUSTOMER AND THE
USERS MUST CONSULT IT. ALTHOUGH THE AUTHORS, PUBLISHER, AND EDITORS
TOOK GREAT CARE IN PUBLISHING THE SCIENCE OF SYNTHESIS, IT IS POSSIBLE
THAT TYPOGRAPHICAL ERRORS EXIST, INCLUDING ERRORS IN THE FORMULAS
GIVEN HEREIN. THEREFORE, IT IS IMPERATIVE
THAT EVERY CUSTOMER AND USER, AND THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EVERY CUSTOMER
AND USER, TO CAREFULLY CHECK WHETHER QUANTITIES, EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS,
OR OTHER INFORMATION GIVEN HEREIN ARE CORRECT BASED ON THE CUSTOMER’S
AND USER’S OWN UNDERSTANDING AS A SCIENTIST. SCALE-UP
OF EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES PUBLISHED IN THE SCIENCE OF SYNTHESIS CARRIES
ADDITIONAL RISKS. IN CASES OF DOUBT, THE CUSTOMER AND USER IS STRONGLY
ADVISED TO SEEK THE OPINION OF AN EXPERT IN THE FIELD, THE PUBLISHERS,
THE EDITORS, OR THE AUTHORS. WHEN USING THE INFORMATION DESCRIBED
HEREIN, THE CUSTOMER AND USER ARE ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS OR
HER OWN ACTIONS, AS WELL AS THE ACTIONS OF SUBORDINATES AND ASSISTANTS,
AND THE CONSEQUENCES ARISING THEREFROM.
THE CUSTOMER AND USER CAN FIND UNDER WWW.SCIENCE-OF-SYNTHESIS.COM
A NON-EXHAUSTIVE LIST OF INTERNATIONAL SAFETY REGULATIONS, I.E. IT
SERVES AS A GENERAL GUIDE. THE CUSTOMER AND USER REMAIN SOLELY RESPONSIBLE
FOR IDENTIFYING ALL RELEVANT SAFETY REGULATIONS. THE CUSTOMER SHALL
CAUSE ALL OF ITS USERS TO BE FREQUENTLY ALERTED TO THOSE GUIDELINES.
We are pleased to announce that the Annual Reviews series are now
available online through records in The CAT and through the LIAS A-Z
List at http://www.lias.psu.edu/alall.html.
Annual Reviews is a collection of comprehensive critical reviews of
the literature in 30 disciplines in the Biomedical, Physical, and
Social Sciences. The reviews are written by leading scientists in
the fields, and are heavily cited and highly ranked in terms of impact
factors. Coverage is back to 1996, and is updated yearly.
The length of time that you can keep a video or CD out has been changed
to ONE WEEK for all materials.
Heretofore video and CD loan periods varied wildly from location to
location; this change will standardize the loan period across all
library locations. The new loan period will save everyone a lot of
confusion.
You can find videos and CDs through The CAT (the Libraries’
online catalog at (www.libraries.psu.edu)
and through the MediaTech catalog (www.medianet.libraries.psu.edu).
This one week loan period applies to items being borrowed from the
Libraries. It does not apply to items being placed on course reserve.
If you have any questions, please call 814/865-9697.
