If you have any questions, please feel free to contact
Nan Butkovich (njb2@psu.edu, 814/
865-3716) or Bob Seeds (rss5@psu.edu,
814/ 865-3714) or stop by our offices in the Physical and Mathematical
Sciences Library in 201 Davey Lab.
We are currently negotiating several new licenses for
electronic publications that will be of interest to you. I’ve
described the status of these below:
Annual Reviews: The
negotiations are complete, and our electronic access will begin in
January. However, when we start, we won’t have any of the back
files; we’ll only have access to 2005 and forward. This includes
all of the Annual Reviews titles.
Optical Society of America:
Beginning in 2005 we’ll have electronic access to the following
OSA titles: Journal of the Optical Society of America A & B, Applied
Optics, and Optics Letters.
Society for Industrial and
Applied Mathematics: Beginning in 2005 we'll have access to
the full digital archive (LOCUS) of SIAM journals - all 11 titles
from 1952/inception to 1996. Their electronic editions continue to
be available individually from 1997- to date.
Science of Synthesis:
The license has been sent forward for approval. If there aren’t
any problems that have to be negotiated, access should begin sometime
in 2005.
Royal Society of Chemistry:
I’m currently working on the license for the electronic archive.
Physics Abstracts:
I am currently working on the Physics Abstracts back files (1898-1968).
Chemical Abstracts Service has asked all the SciFinder
Scholar Key Contact people to remind people within their institution
of the use restrictions with SciFinder Scholar. Below is a quotation
from the letter that they sent us:
…only current faculty, administrative
staff, and registered students (including
part-time, post-doctoral and visiting students) are authorized to
use SciFinder
Scholar, and their use is limited to academic research, teaching,
and
publication purposes only.
…any commercial use of SciFinder Scholar
is strictly prohibited. Thus,
patentability research and research performed with the intention of
delivering
results outside of your university are not allowed. Likewise, the
distribution
of CAS data by assignment, sale, sublicense, loan, or other means
to an
unauthorized user is prohibited.
If you want more details concerning what constitutes
authorized and prohibited use, they’re available during the
log-in process. You have to agree to these conditions each time you
log in, so if you haven’t read them before, please take a few
moments to read them the next time you use SciFinder Scholar.
As you use the various databases and electronic publications
available through the LIAS system, you may have noticed a “GET
IT!” button at the brief title or full citation screens in the
databases. This is a new service that the Libraries has started to
offer. When clicked, this button will open a new window that will
show links to full-text, The CAT and other appropriate services.
We’re working to get as many of the databases
linked with “Get it!”, although at the present time not
all are. Some that are include all CSA databases, all Silverplatter
databases, all ABC/CLIO databases, Blackwell Scientific, and the Proquest
databases.
(Modified from e-mail announcements)
The networked printer in the PAMS Library has been
converted to read the magnetic stripes on our ID cards (old and new),
departmental and research cards, and the new Visitor’s Cards.
If you’re ID card has a magnetic stripe, you can add LionCash
to it and use it in networked printers and most photocopy machines
in the University Libraries.
To set up a personal debit account, you can either
go to the ID+ office in the HUB or log on to www.idcard.psu.edu.
The latter requires that you use a credit card; if you go to the ID+
office, you can use cash to add to your account.
The old LionCash (chip) dispensers have been
removed from all library locations. Some nearby new Visitor Card dispensers
have been installed in Pattee and Paterno Libraries, and the Laptop
Library.
Books that have been checked out on a semester
loan are due on 16 Dec. 2004, unless you’ve already renewed
them. If you haven’t renewed them and want to keep them another
loan period, please go to http://www.libraries.psu.edu/tas/lending/
and click on “RENEW/VIEW MY ACCOUNT”. Follow the onscreen
instructions to renew your books. Please remember to check your account
after selecting RENEW so that you can be sure that everything was
renewed successfully.
Need to put some books on reserve for your students
for spring semester? Now is a good time to turn the request forms
in. That way we’ll have time to recall library copies if someone
has them checked out and order new copies if we don’t have one
available.
Please contact Jon Wallace (jmw19@psu.edu)
with your lists.
The PAMS Library (and all other branch libraries at
University Park) will operate on the following schedule during the
upcoming holidays and breaks. For hours for Pattee Library, Paterno
Library, or the Pollock Laptop Library, please go to the Libraries
