About the Title

Howard Hustler

The Howard Hustler, edited by proprietor F.S. Dunham, was published between the years 1898 and 1915. The newspaper served the borough of Howard and other villages and towns in Howard Township, including Mt. Eagle, Mechanicsville, Mountain Eagle, and Manntown.

Howard, Pennsylvania, was established as a borough in 1864 and is located in Centre County near Bald Eagle Mountain. Prior to its incorporation as a borough, Howard was a recognized township dating back to 1810. Howard Borough’s location along Bald Eagle Creek offered plenty of opportunity for industry. The Creek provided power for a gristmill, as well as the Howard Brick Company and Howard Iron Works. The Bald Eagle and Spring Creek Navigation Company canal system, as well as the Pennsylvania Railroad, provided means for transporting goods to and from Howard’s industrial establishments. Howard is also known as the hometown of the Governor Packer family. James Packer, father of the governor, built a mill in the area as early as 1793.

By the 1900 census, when the Howard Hustler’s publication was in full swing, Howard Township had a population of 819.

Other newspapers that served the area during its formation years were the Howard Weekly Hornet (1894-1898), Weekly Hornet (1894-uuuu), Post and Bulletin (1899-1900), and Mountain Times (1926-1928). To date, no known copies of the Weekly Hornet, Post and Bulletin, or Mountain Times have been found.
