John H. (Jack) Sulzer, Associate Dean, Commonwealth Campus Libraries

This academic administrative position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Oversees all libraries and library services at the 23 Commonwealth Campus Libraries (CCL) and acts as liaison with libraries throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and library services through the University's World Campus;
  • Provides programmatic leadership for the Libraries' role in University World Campus, Distance Education, outreach, and non-University Park functions;
  • Ensures the quality of CCL collections and services;
  • Holds fiscal accountability secondary to the Dean of Libraries and Scholarly Communications for CCL operations, including budget development and allocation of funds;
  • Oversees recruitment, development, evaluation, and retention of CCL faculty;
  • Administers the promotion and tenure process for CCL faculty;
  • Participates as a member of the Libraries' management team, assuming a major role for planning, budgeting, and policy-making across the University Libraries;
  • Serves on the Dean's Library Council;
  • Serves on appropriate library and university committees and councils, and communicates with appropriate university offices;
  • Works closely with Chancellors and Chief Academic Officers of the campuses for strategic planning and budgeting related to the libraries;
  • Ensures adequate funding base by leading in grant-seeking and participating in Development functions as requested by the Dean;
  • Represents the Dean at the Dean's discretion.
Jack holds a Bachelor of Arts (Social Sciences) from Mansfield University, a Master of Arts (History) from Penn State, and a Master of Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh.

Christine Avery, Head, University College Libraries and Collection Development Coordinator for Commonwealth Campus Libraries

The primary assignment of the Head of the University College Libraries is to lead and coordinate activities of the fourteen University College Libraries (UCL). Specific responsibilities:
  • Providing administrative oversight of all libraries and library services at the 14 University College campuses in coordination with the Associate Dean for Commonwealth Campus Libraries and the Head Librarian at each location.
  • Ensuring that quality services and collections are provided at all 14 locations.
  • Advising the Associate Dean for Commonwealth Campus Libraries on issues within the University College Libraries, including budgeting and staffing.
  • Supervising, evaluating, and supporting the Head Librarian at each of the 14 locations.
  • Providing for recruitment, development, evaluation, and retention of University College Library faculty.
  • Addressing equity issues among University College Libraries and allocating financial resources.
  • Effectively communicating library issues to each of the 14 campus administrations.
  • Providing for a collaborative working environment and for liaison with Collection Development, Instruction, Access Services, Digital Library Technologies, and other departments.
  • Serve as the Collection Development Coordinator for Commonwealth Campus Libraries and Co-Chair, along with the Coordinator for University Park, the Collection Development Council.
  • Provide leadership of collections issues, especially as they pertain to the Commonwealth Campus Libraries, including policy and budget concerns, communications among the University Park and Commonwealth Campus selectors, selector assignments, and the collection development infrastructure.
Chris holds a B.S. in Sociology from Texas A&M University, a M.S. in Applied Social Research from Texas Christian University, and received her M.L.S. from the University of Texas at Austin.
