Barbara I. Dewey is Dean, University Libraries and Scholarly Communications, at the Pennsylvania State University. She was Dean of Libraries, University of Tennessee, Knoxville from 2000-2010. She held several administrative positions at the University of Iowa Libraries including Interim University Librarian and Director, Information and Research Services (1987-2000). Prior to her work at Iowa she was Director of Admissions at Indiana University’s School of Library and Information Science (1980-1987), Reference and Interlibrary Loan Librarian, Northwestern University Libraries (1978-1980), and Head, Reference and Adult Services, Minnesota Valley Regional Library in Mankato, Minnesota (1977-1978). She is the author/editor of six books, and has published articles and presented papers on research library topics including digital libraries, technology, user education, fundraising, diversity, organizational change, and human resources. Her latest book, published by Chandos Press, Oxford, UK, is Transforming Research Libraries for the Global Knowledge Society.
She holds the M.A. in library science (1976), the B.A. in sociology/anthropology (1974) from the University of Minnesota, the Public Management Certificate from Indiana University (1985). Dewey is chair of the Association for Research Libraries (ARL) Transforming Research Libraries Steering Committee and former Board of Directors member. She was a member of the State of Tennessee Governor's Advisory Board on Libraries.
