The Walter and Doris Goldstein Music and Media Center, located on the second floor of West Pattee Library, houses a collection of 28,000 sound and 7,000 video recordings related to the arts and humanities. Assistants at the service desk help users locate and request videos and CDs from several other collections in the Penn State University Libraries, including the Media and Technology Support Services (MediaTech) collection. Playback equipment includes CD and DVD players, VCRs, turntables, cassette players, and laserdisk players, as well as computers with sound and video cards and DVD drives.
Instructors may place video and audio recordings and music scores on reserve for their courses at the Music and Media Center service desk. Contact Gwen Catchen, reserves supervisor for the Music and Media Center, to have items placed on reserve for your course. Through a cooperative agreement with MediaTech, this course reserve service is also available for videos housed in the MediaTech collection. Instructors who wish to place a video from the MediaTech collection on reserve at the Music and Media Center, or who wish to schedule a video in the Music and Media Center collection for use on a particular date, may do so by contacting Gwen Catchen.
Items on course reserve can be used with playback equipment in the library by any user all hours the library is open, but they do not circulate outside of the building without permission from the instructor for whom the item is on reserve.
Videos in the Music and Media Center (and throughout the University Libraries) circulate for one week and can be renewed twice if no one else has requested the video. Sound recordings in the Music and Media Center circulate for the same loan period as books (called Regular Loans).
The Video Viewing Room has VCR, DVD, and laserdisk capabilities, small groups can screen videos in this room, which seats approximately 17. Use of the room can be scheduled in advance by contacting the Music and Media Center at 865-3616. The room is available on a first-come, first-served basis, when not previously scheduled.
