Topic Overview

Specialized Encyclopedias and Books provide a broad or historical overview of your topic.

Gale Virtual Reference Library: Gale Virtual Reference Library includes full-text encyclopedias, almanacs, and specialized reference sources in a wide variety of subject fields.

The CAT: The CAT is an online catalog of resources in the Penn State Libraries. Limit your search by resource material type, search all Penn State libraries or a single location, and electronically request resources that are not at the Brandywine Campus (Use the I WANT IT button).
Research, News, Commentary

Journal, Magazine, and Newspaper articles report research, news, and commentary on important issues.

ProQuest (Multiple Databases) ProQuest includes full-text of selected peer-reviewed journals, magazines, trade publications, and newspapers in fields ranging from the arts and humanities to science and technology.

Newsbank -- America's Newspapers: Newsbank -- America's Newspapers contains full-text of local and regional newspapers across the United States. Includes the Philadelphia Inquirer and local New Jersey and Delaware newspapers.

Historical Research - American History

America: History & Life: America: History & Life indexes scholarly research on topics in American and Canadian history.

Opposing Viewpoints

Selected articles and special reports present opposing viewpoints on hot topics and controversial issues.

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center: Opposing Viewpoints provides research and background information on controversial social issues. Viewpoint essays are supplemented by statistics, primary documents, websites, and full-text magazine and newspaper articles.

CQ Researcher:
CQ Researcher explores in-depth, "hot issues" currently being discussed in the news. Topics include social issues, politics, economics, the environment, education, science, and  more. Each issue report includes an overview, pro-con issue statements, a chronology of important events, and a bibliography.

ProQuest (Multiple Databases)
To limit your ProQuest search results to opinion and commentary articles, use the search option DOCUMENT TYPE = COMMENTARY.

Research Guides by Subject

Research Guides By Subject: Research Guides recommend journal databases and other specialized resources for research in the designated subject field. Browse the alphabetical list of research guides or search the list by keywords.

FullText Articles and ILLiad

  • Review your database search results, and click on  to find direct links from a database citation to the article full-text online (when available).
  • ILLiad:  When GET IT! cannot link you to an article online, click on ILLiad in the GET  IT!  window to request a free PDF copy.
  • You will be notified by email when your pdf copy is available for download from the ILLiad web site.

DID YOU REMEMBER TO:

  • Confirm your library registration?
    • If your registration is not complete, go to the Vairo Library circulation desk to have your "privilege extended." This procedure will allow you to place holds in the CAT using I WANT IT.
  • Create a Free NETLIBRARY account?
    • Go to NetLibrary from the Databases by Title List and click on "create a free account" in the upper right corner. Once your NetLibrary account is created, you can login to view full-text of e-books in NetLibrary.
  • Register with ILLiad?
    • Go to ILLiad (http://ill.libraries.psu.edu), login with your Penn State ID and Password, and complete the registration form. When you are registered, links to ILLiad from a GETIT! window will automatically complete photocopy request forms for articles that are not full-text in Penn State databases.
  • Ask the Vairo Library Staff or the Virtual Reference Service   for Help?
    • Susan, Mary Fran, and Sara at the Vairo Library or the Penn State librarians covering the Virtual Reference Service will be happy to answer your questions and help you with search strategies. Don't be surprised if you are helped by one of us through Virtual Reference, as well as in Vairo Library!
