HDFS 418 - Fall 2009 -Understanding Evidence Based Parenting as a Strategy to Bridge Disparities

Assignment: Find peer-reviewed articles that discuss your assigned parenting program. Use library databases and Google Scholar. Compare and contrast different parenting programs' strength and weaknesses.
Scholarly Peer-Reviewed Research Journals
Scholarly peer-reviewed research journals publish original research or original scholarly analysis. To ensure high quality, scholars review the accuracy and validity of the author’s methodology and conclusions before approving an article for publication. Research articles are written in a scientific style that includes details of the methodology and analysis.

 

Database Search Strategies

  • Review your ASSIGNMENT GUIDE for examples of evidence based parenting programs.
  • Begin your searches using specific program names as KEYWORDS. Review relevant articles for additional keywords and DESCRIPTORS to add to revised searches.
  • MARK the articles that you find potentially useful to store them in a group for later review.
  • EXPORT selected article citations into REFWORKS to format them in APA styles.

APA (American Psychological Association) Citation Style using RefWorks

  • Before you begin searching for articles, open RefWorks.
  • Create a folder and name it for this search topic.
  • RefWorks is a web-based bibliography manager that allows you to import references from databases and format them in the citation style of your choice.

Full Text Articles Online and ILLiad ( PDF copy requests)

  • Review your database search results, and click on  to find direct links from a database citation to the article full-text online (when available).
  • ILLiad:  When GET IT! cannot link you to an article online, click on ILLiad in the GET  IT!  window to request a free PDF copy.
  • You will be notified by email when your pdf copy is available for download from the ILLiad web site.

Below are descriptions and search strategies for the databases we reviewed in class.  Connect to these databases by clicking on the links below or  by clicking on Databases by Title under "Find Articles and Databases" on the Brandywine Library Home page.

Social Services Abstracts: Social Services Abstracts indexes research on social work, human services, and related areas, including social welfare, social policy, and community development.

  • MARK relevant articles
  • click on SAVE, PRINT, EMAIL

PsycINFO: PsycINFO is the most comprehensive database for psychology and related disciplines. It contains citations and abstracts of journal articles, book chapters, books, technical reports, and dissertations.
  • search using program KEYWORDS and DESCRIPTORS assigned to related articles
  • MARK relevant articles
  • click on SAVE, PRINT, EMAIL
  • click on EXPORT TO REFWORKS

PsycARTICLES: PsycARTICLES is a database of full-text articles from journals published by the American Psychological Association, the APA Educational Publishing Foundation, the Canadian Psychological Association, and Hogrefe & Huber.
  • search using program KEYWORDS and DESCRIPTORS assigned to related articles
  • MARK relevant articles
  • click on SAVE, PRINT, EMAIL
  • click on EXPORT TO REFWORKS

PubMed (Medline): PubMed is the National Library of Medicine’s premier research database. It indexes research journals in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences
  • click on ADVANCED SEARCH
  • enter program KEYWORDS as TITLE/ABSTRACT search and click GO
  • change DISPLAY from SUMMARY to ABSTRACT PLUS
  • MARK relevant articles; click on SEND TO and choose email
  • Email marked citations to yourself, and add to REFWORKS manually

ProQuest Research Library:  ProQuest includes full text of selected peer-reviewed journals in many academic fields including psychology, education, and sociology.
  • enter program KEYWORDS
  • check box for SCHOLARLY JOURNALS, INCLUDING PEER-REVIEWED and click SEARCH.
  • review SUGGESTED TOPICS for relevant search strategies
  • MARK all relevant citations
  • click on MY RESEARCH (look near the top), click on EXPORT CITATIONS - EXPORT DIRECTLY TO REFWORKS
Google Scholar and GET IT@ PENN STATE
GOOGLE SCHOLAR (http://scholar.google.com) searches the web for scholarly literature across many disciplines and sources, including journal articles, books, theses, and technical reports.
  • Google Scholar searches are NOT as precise and comprehensive as subject database searches, but Google Scholar searches ARE often helpful for initial exploration of cross-disciplinary topics, for verifying incomplete citations, or for locating full text articles in Penn State Libraries' databases.

  • To identify Penn State Libraries' holding when searching Google Scholar from your personal computer, you have two options:

  1. Set your GOOGLE SCHOLAR PREFERENCES for Pennsylvania State University
    • Click on the link to "SCHOLAR PREFERENCES."
    •  In the LIBRARY LINKS type: Pennsylvania State University and click on FIND LIBRARY.
    •  When "Pennsylvania State University (Get it! @ Penn State)" appears, place a check in the box preceding it and click on SAVE PREFERENCES.
    • Now, if the Google Scholar search includes results that are available in Penn State full text databases, a link for "GET IT! @ Penn State" will appear.
    • Click on "GET IT! @ Penn State" to display full text from Penn State subscriptions.

  2. Connect to the LIAS-VPN (the Libraries' Virtual Private Network)
    • You may already have the Penn State VPN software on your computer if you use it to access the wireless Internet on campus. If not, download and install the VPN client software at http://downloads.its.psu.edu (select "Connecting to Penn State," then "VPN--Virtual Private Network").
    • To connect to the LIAS-VPN, open the VPN client (look for the program named "Cisco Systems VPN Client"). In the Connection Entry box, scroll to the bottom, select LIAS-VPN, then click "Connect." You will be prompted for your PSU Access Account ID and password. The LIAS-VPN will connect once you are authenticated.
    • Now, if the Google Scholar search includes results that are available in Penn State full text databases, a link for "GET IT! @ Penn State" will appear.
    • Click on "GET IT! @ Penn State" to display full text from Penn State subscriptions.
