Before you begin searching for articles, open Refworks: "RefWorks is a web-based bibliography and database manager that allows you to create your own personal database by importing references from text files or online databases and other various sources."


The CAT: online catalog of books owned by Penn State Libraries
  • enter relevant keywords connected by AND; use $ as wildcard
  • Use the Drop Down options for MATERIAL TYPE and IN LIBRARY
  • click on DETAILS and MORE to find subject terms to focus your search
  • use I WANT IT to request a book
  • to export your citations to Refworks: open Refworks, from the Tools tab click "Search Online catalog or database," enter book title and click Search


Proquest: indexes 5,000+ magazines, journals, and newspapers.
  • enter relevant keywords
  • focus search by selecting from the Suggested Topics
  • investigate the articles included in the Scholarly Journals and Trade Publications tabs
  • mark the articles that are relevant
  • to export your citations to Refworks, click on MY RESEARCH (look near the top) - Export Citations - Export directly to Refworks


ACM: Full text of every article ever published by ACM.  [Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is "widely recognized as the premier membership organization for computing professionals, delivering resources that advance computing as a science and a profession; enable professional development; and promote policies and research that benefit society." source: ACM website]
  • click on Advanced Search (under the search box)
  • enter search terms and limit your search by date
  • Refine search by clicking on "Discovered Terms" on the left (2 times), then select a term to narrow your search (click more to see all terms)
  • To export your citations to Refworks, follow the instructions listed here:  http://www.library.wisc.edu/refworks/importing/acm_digital.html


IEEE Xplore: full text of all IEEE and IEE journal articles, conference papers, and standards published since 1988. [IEEE is "the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology." source: IEEE website]
  • click on Advanced Search
  • enter your search terms, change search field to Abstract and limit your search date
  • review the "hits" and modify the search with relevant keywords or index terms (use check box to search within results)
  • mark the articles that are relevant
  • to export your citations into refworks, click on View Selected Items, select Citation and Refworks from boxes on the left, click double arrows


Inspec: computer science, information technology, and electrical engineering
Compendex:
computer science, information technology, management in engineering
  • select one of the databases listed above, then click ALL under SELECT DATABASE to search both simultaneously
  • enter search terms
  • change search field to SUBJECT/TITLE/ABSTRACT
  • limit the dates field
  • Refine results by INCLUDING or EXCLUDING terms on the right margin
  • mark the articles that are relevant
  • to export your citations to Refworks, click on View Selections - Download - Refworks Direct Import - Download
