Automobile Manufacturing Industry Guide, NAICS Code 33611
Scope of This Guide:
This industry sub-sector of 336 Transportation Equipment Manufacturing is comprised of companies that manufacture cars, light trucks and sport utility vehicles. Vehicle manufacturing in the U.S. was once dominated by the "Big Three" auto makers: General Motors, Ford and Chrylser and their subsidiaries. In recent years, Japanese companies Toyota, Honda, and Nissan have begun manufacturing and assembling vehicles in the U.S., and are capturing a significant share of the market.
If motor vehicle manufacturing were a country, it would be the sixth largest economy in the world. Asia and Western Europe each produce about twice as many vehicles as North America. The top five vehicle manufacturing countries in 2007 were Japan, USA, China, Germany and South Korea.
