Glass Manufacturing Industry Guide, NAICS Code 3272
Scope of This Guide:
Glass manufacturing technology has existed since the time of the ancient Phoenicians. The basic materials - silicon dioxide, sodium carbonate, and either calcium carbonate or calcium oxide - are abundant and relatively inexpensive. All glass manufacturing begins with the production of a molten glass batch. Specific constituents of the batch are formulated for the purpose of the resulting product and will include chemicals to enhance clarity, color, strength, heat resistance, and other qualities. The batch can then be made into more specific products, such as float, sheet, plate, laminated, tempered, pressed, blown, mirrored, or optical fiber glass. The scale of glass manufacturing ranges from hand-worked art glass to large, continuous-process high output industrial glass manufacturing operations.
Glass manufacturing uses large amounts of energy for producing the batch and annealing the final product. Specialized facilities and equipment are also required for moving large quantities of raw materials, creating the batch, working the glass in various stages of manufacture, handling finished products, and managing heat. Chemicals, equipment and processes pose significant hazards for manufacturing personnel.
