Non-profit Organizations
Scope of This Guide:
The Nonprofit Sector consists of legitimately recognized organizations which exist to serve a public interest without making a profit. Examples of nonprofit organizations include charities, hospitals and schools. They may provide humanitarian aid, health care, educational services, environmental monitoring, support for the arts, or many other services. Such organizations usually seek and are granted tax-exempt status with federal, state, or local taxing authorities. Contributions to tax-exempt organizations are normally tax deductible. These organizations vary in scope from local neighborhood or community charities to national and international organizations, such as the American Red Cross. Budgets and staff vary as well, from all volunteer start-up associations to organizations with tens of thousands of paid employees.Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage
