Soil Surveys

Processing

  • Always catalog with the description as it is issued. Any local idiosyncrasies record in local fields: 590, etc. - don't be redundant with this information.
  • Make sure you merge your copy into any existing Marcive record. There may be two Marcive records in The CAT: one for the main text, another for the maps. Merge the two Marcive records together before updating with full copy if necessary.
  • Add the 086.
  • The Marcive call number must be deleted. A call number must be formed as shown below. The state code is from the table and the county is formed using standard cuttering procedure.
  • The first copy of a Pennsylvania soil survey should be assigned the Library/Home Location UP-LIFESCI/REF-LS (Life Sciences Reference). Each subsequent copy of a Pennsylvania soil survey should continue to go to the SOILSURVEY location: UP-LIFESCI/SOILSURVEY.
  • Catalog as title main entry. If there is one, change 100 field to a 700 and correct the 245 indicators. There is usually a statement "By John Doe" at the beginning when there is a 100 with John Doe. Include a 500 stating this if not on copy.
  • Bracket the 260c and justify. There is usually an "Issued ____" statement in preliminary paging.
  • If the 300a states that the item is in a case/portfolio, give the actual size of the case/portfolio in the 300c. If not, include a 500: "Issued in portfolio" and give the height of the contents in the 300c.
  • The title is almost always from the cover; state this in a 500.
  • Verify the 650's: there must be two per county or other jurisdiction. See below.
  • Remember that Louisiana uses Parishes instead of counties.
