Cartographic Materials Fixed Fields Cheat Sheet

Cartographic Material Format

This is an abbreviation of the USMARC standard, showing the most common and likely values for inputting cartographic records in Unicorn. This checklist is most useful for Creating new records in Workflows - to check codes on imported records, fuller information is available at the LC Website.

Top

Desc: Descriptive Cataloging form (LDR/18) M

All of our new records will be "a", which is the default. If we need to use [blank] it will be for a special project.

  • [blank] - Non-ISBD (pre-AACR2)
  • a - AACR2 [default]

TypeCtrl: Type of Control (LDR/08) IA

All of our local records will be [blank], no specified type, which is the default.

  • [blank] = No Specified Type (default)

Entrd: Date Entered (008/00-05) SS

System supplied; don't mess with it. Don't confuse this with Date Cataloged, on the Control screen.

Dat_Tp: Type of Date (008/06) M

One-digit code to categorize the type of dates recorded, the same as we did for LIAS. The default is "s" for a single date, but change it when necessary.

  • r - Reprint
  • m - Multiple dates
  • s - single date [default]
  • t - Copyright date
  • q - Questionable date
  • n - Dates unknown.

Date1: and Date2: Date of publication (008/07-10 and 11-14) M

Same as 260|c. Use a "u" for uncertain digits; for example, 260 |c[199-] would be 199u in Fixed Field.

Top

Ctry: Place of Publication, production, or execution (008/15-17) IA

From the 260|a. Yes, we need to do this, and yes, it's a pain, and no, there isn't an acceptable default. Use the table in Cataloger's Desktop, or at the LC Web Site. See the instructions, or an alphabetical list of codes. The code for US is a state code with a "u", so the code for any place in Pennsylvania would be pau.

Lang: Language code (008/35-37) M

The 3-digit language code. We do this now - the default will be eng, for English. Use the table in Cataloger's Desktop or on the LC Web site.

  • eng = English (default)

Mod_Rec: Modified Record (008/38) IA

Essentially all of our records will be [blank] which is the default. For special projects we may have other codes, but if so we'll worry about it when we need to.

  • [blank] = Not modified (default)

Source: Cataloging Source (008/39) M

For our local records, the source will be "d" other, which is the default value.

  • d = other (default)

Top

Relief: Relief (008/18-21)

Use up to four codes to describe the relief. If fewer than four codes are used, leave the unused places blank. If more than four types of relief are present, choose the four most important.

  • [blank] - No relief shown [default]
  • a - Contours
  • b - Shading
  • c - Gradient and bathymetric tints
  • d - Hachures
  • e - Bathymetry/soundings
  • f - Form lines
  • g - Spot heights
  • i - Pictorially
  • j - Land forms
  • k - Bathymetry/isolines
  • m - Rock drawings
  • z - Other relief type

Base: Old code; we won't input. Will be merged into Proj.

Prim_Mer: Old code; we won't input. Will be merged into Proj.
