For every item that has a series (490, 440, 800, 810, 811, 830), with the exception of new items having full LC MARC copy - unless you suspect a class together series or serial, do the following:
- In WorkFlows, search a series by choosing Series from the drop down list in any Item Lookup box. Choose a keyword (i.e., Search) or browse (i.e., Begins with) search. If a Series search does not bring up any results, try a Title or General search.
- Verify Series vs. Serial treatment
Some series titles may be present both as serials and as individual titles retrieved by a series title in The CAT.If a serial record is found, look at it to see if items in the same location as the item in hand are being cataloged as a serial. (See Non-Book Material and Identifying Serials.) When this is the case, or if you cannot determine the treatment, refer the item to the Serials Cataloging Team.
If individual titles with a series statement are found in The CAT, look at the records to determine classification patterns as described below.
- Determine Classification
Look at the individual records in the series to see how items in the series are classed. Don't rely on the citation list to do this. You must look at the bibliographic records.
- Classed Separately
- Definition: Each title in the series has a distinctive call number. No volume numbers appear in the call number.
All items in the same location as the item in hand are classed separately.
Accept the call number that you found on the matching CAT record if it is also a "classed separately" call number and add your location.
Some items in the same location as the item in hand are classed separately and some are classed together (see definition below). Send the item to Cataloging.
- Classed Together
- Definition: Each title in the series has the same call number and includes the series numbering in the call number. (e.g., Q11.N5 v.548)
All items in the same location as the item in hand are classed together.
Accept the classed together call number that you found on the matching CAT record and add your location. When the classed together call number is not present on the matching CAT record, it can be taken from one of the other records.
Some items in the same location as the item in hand are classed together and some are classed separately. Send the item to Cataloging.
