BIBCO and The Maps Cataloging Team
Restating BIBCO rules would be redundant, but we have recognized a need for a very brief document summarizing the BIBCO process plus a few interesting reminders, to act as a nexus for all things BIBCO.
BIBCO standards can apply to both new (original) and enhanced records (existing copy). BIBCO requires that all elements in the record be brought to BIBCO standards, while still making allowances for Cataloger’s Judgment and diverse interpretations. So, for example, all 090s should be changed to 050 when encountered, but a valid subject cutter should not be changed simply due to personal preference.
Catalogers new to BIBCO will have their work revised; the local review consists of two BIBCO participants each reviewing a minimum of 5 records. After the new cataloger is released from review, all new BIBCO contributions are reviewed by a single member of the Team for an undetermined period – essentially, until the Team reaches consensus on releasing the cataloger from review.
In general, most retro can be considered for BIBCO. For various reasons, many projects are not good BIBCO candidates, due to quaint local variants. For example, do NOT catalog items from the EMSL Micro Project or the Maps Library Insurance map projects (Sanborn or FEMA) to BIBCO level.
BIBCO guidelines may be found in the written manual, supplemented by National Rules issued and maintained in AACR2 and the LCRIs; these may be accessed online through Cataloger’s Desktop.
BIBCO is essentially similar to OCLC enhance, with some interesting differences. A few BIBCO reminders:
Fixed field elements:
Unlike Enhance or regular cataloging, the ELvl should be coded “blank” for Full-level PCC and the Srce should be coded “c,” indicating a Cooperative cataloging program, unless the record was created by a National bibliographic agency, such as DLC, in which case the Srce should remain coded as “blank.”
Variable Fields:
050 All LC class numbers should be in 050, with indicators [blank] 4.
042 pcc
043 Either 043 or 052 should be added to provide coded geographic access. Field 043 may be inserted via a macro in OCLC
500 To justify estimated dates of publication based on local receipt information, add subfield 5 PSt
546 Field 546 is second in the hierarchy of 5xx field order, behind only Nature, scope or artistic form of item. Cf. Note Order
830 Must be established and controlled; otherwise, must be 490 _0.
All access points must be established and controlled, including series and new entries added to NACO based on the record.
