PA Flood Insurance Maps

Approximately 2,500 titles (~10,000 sheets) need cataloging and will be housed in Cato2 Annex. They are now filed by CID number, but they must be sent to the Annex in call # order.  They will have specialized gather and cataloging procedures. The majority of records should be original cataloging. Our goal by the end of 2011 is to be working on titles on page 15 (of 55) of the index.

PA Township Map Cutters

In the past, PA (possibly other states too) Township maps were assigned the wrong cutters, based on County instead of the Cities and Towns table. For new receipts, assign the correct cutter. After the Maps Library moves to its' new location next year (2009) we will go back and correct the maps that were assigned incorrect cutters.

Sanborn Maps

Penn State's collection of Pennsylvania Sanborn maps were cataloged during their stay in Special Collections, but most are not itemized, and the records may benefit from added detail. The collection currently resides in the Maps Library, in room W-2A. There are some 60 drawers of maps, about eight of which have been processed - all communities beginning with the letter A. We will proceed alphabetically through the collection, starting with the letter B, itemizing each sheet and updating the records, and Preservation will digitize the maps. Although there is no timetable for completion, we expect to proceed in a timely fashion and to make consistent if incremental progress. As of Oct. 2010, all Sanborns should have MAPS-MP as their Home location. Our goal for 2011 is to continue to work at completing 2 folders per week.

Joint Operations Graphic Maps

Itemize 282 new sheets to this existing set of 652 sheets housed in the Annex. Change call numbers by adding "(A)" if they are aeronautical sheets and add the latest compilation or publication date found on the sheet. Ignore printing dates. Do not add G for ground maps.

Example: G3201.P6 s250.U55 |zNB 44-6 (A) 1982

Once these 282 sheets are itemized, the other 652 sheets will be recalled from the Annex or corrected on location and their call numbers will be corrected to the new form and deduped if needed.

Newsmaps Cataloging

A collection of approx. 50 World War II Newsmaps will be cataloged after being encapsulated by the Preservation Dept. A high priority will be given to this project. The records will be enhanced with in-depth description and subject analysis to bring out the unique and historical aspects of the items. Links will be included to connect each item record to it's online digital form at the North Texas University Library website. They will be classed together as G3201.S7 svar.U5|zv._no._ and housed in the Maps library with home location ARCHIVE-MP.

655 Form/Genre Terms

Cartographic rule changes in August 2010 mandate the use of 655 form/genre terms in all cartographic records, and alter the form of many commonly used subject subdivisions. All new and edited cartographic materials will be cataloged by the new rules; in addition, certain elements in the collection may benefit from retrospectively converting records in the CAT to new rules, by adding a form/genre term, and in some instances, editing the subject heading. Such maintenance will be done as time allows and needs are identified, with little impact on current projects. The first instance will be adding the form/genre term "Fire insurance maps" to all appropriate records, in Winter 2010.  We have successfully incorporated the concept and will continue adding form/genre headings to all our maps cataloging efforts.
