4XX/8XX Series

Conversion of Obsolete 400, 410, 411, and 440 Fields

The following fields are obsolete, but may be found on copy: 400, 410, 411, 440. Convert these fields to appropriate 490 fields or 490/830 fields as noted below:

First, look up the series in the national authority file. Follow the instructions below based on if you find an authority record or not.

Series found in the NAF

  1. Check the authority record for any special instructions in the 667 field and follow them (give as a quoted note, etc.)
  2. If there are no special instructions, check the 645 field. If it is coded n (not traced), convert the 400, 410, 411, or 440 to a 490 with indicators set to 0 and blank. Transcribe the series in 490 as it appears on the item in hand.
  3. If 645 is coded t (traced), put the authorized form in 800, 810, 811, or 830 corresponding with the 100, 110, 111, or 130 in the authority record. Convert the 400, 410, 411, or 440 to a 490 with indicators set to 1 and blank. Transcribe the series in 490 as it appears on the item in hand. Indicators for 800, 810, 811, and 830 are the same as they are in the corresponding 100, 110, 111, and 130 field in the authority record.

Series NOT found in the NAF

  1. Indicate on the ORF that it is being referred for series. An original cataloger will establish it and update all records in the CAT that are in the series.

Transcription of the 490 Field
