700/710 Personal Name and Corporate Name Added Entries

When appropriate, add 700 and 710 fields for illustrators, printers, publishers, translators, stereotypers, binders, binding designers, book designers, cover designers, bookjacket designers, former owners, illuminators, lithographers, engravers, papermakers, attributed names, typographers, etc.

Also, make added entries for all Penn State-related authors, contributors, and organizations that otherwise would not have been added based on current standard cataloging rules (such as an author of a chapter or article in a volume where the content was created by a number of contributors).

In most cases it will be obvious when to add these. This is a judgment call. When in doubt, add it. Examples might include:

  • A book that includes many engravings with the engravers name appearing on the title page or somewhere prominent on the book
  • All fine press books
  • Artists' books
  • Science fiction books in which the cover art is considered significant
  • Any book in which the illustrations are considered important
  • A note on an ORF by Special Collections staff about making an entry for an illustrator, binding designer, etc.

Add an appropriate relator term in |e to the heading. A comma should precede |e unless there is a dash (from an open-ended date) preceding it. The term in subfield e should be in lowercase and should end with a period. Follow the standardized list created by RBMS: RBMS Controlled Vocabularies: Relator Terms.

Exceptions: Do not add relator terms for editors and compilers.

If you need a relator term and it isn't in the RBMS list, refer to a specialist.

Examples:

700 1_  Dalrymple, Abner C.,|eill.
700 1_  Dubberstein, Waldo H.|q(Waldo Herman),|d1907-1983,|estereotyper.
700 1_  Jackson, Dumpster,|d1937-|eformer owner.
710 2_  C. Sherman & Son,|eprinter.
