The 035 field was used to record the control number of an OCLC or RLIN record when that record was considered to be an exact match and used to create a new bibliographic record in The CAT from 1990 to 2003. Our holdings would appear on the OCLC or RLIN record represented by this number and so was important for resource sharing. This practice was suspended with the move to the Unicorn WorkFlows system since control numbers are now recorded elsewhere.
DLT is now using the 035 field to record the title control number, or local system number, in the bib record and also the OCLC number of the imported record that Penn State's holding should be on.

As mentioned, the practice of recording OCLC and RLIN numbers in bib records began in August 1990 and was suspended in 2003. After a number of years, OCLC numbers began being recorded in the 035 field once again.
Accept these locally created 035s as found. They will contain the prefix (OCoLC). RLIN was merged with OCLC, so you should no longer see prefixes for RLIN records: (CStRLIN).

When a record from The CAT containing a local 035 is used as Near Copy to create a new record, delete the 035. Also see Near Copy Processing Guidelines.
Records from external databases may contain 035s pertaining to their own local systems. These 035s do not contain the prefix OCoLC or CStRLIN, or (Sirsi) or a LIAS number.
Delete 035s from records imported from external databases since they do not pertain to our own system.
