Alternate Titles (not Title Changes)
Based on the 2002 CONSER Revision of Rules for Title Changes and the CONSER Cataloging Manual, Module 16.2.4
If the changes to the title are minor, do not treat the change as an actual title change. Instead, add a 246 to the existing record. Consider the change minor if:
Change comes after first 5 words (in $a, $n, or $p) and does not change the meaning of the title (i.e. the subject and scope).
Change in spelling of a word (encyclopaedia → encyclopedia).
Abbreviated word, sign, number or date vs. spelled-out form.
Arabic numeral vs. roman numeral.
One word compound vs. two-word compounds, whether hyphenated or not (Open house → Openhouse).
Acronym or initialism vs. full form (Television monthly → TV monthly; Savings & loan industry trends → S & L industry trends).
Change in grammatical form: singular vs. plural, adjective vs. noun, genitive vs. nominative (Fishery report → Fisheries report ; Africa news watch → African news watch).
Entire title replaced by an acronym or vice versa (Journal of applied mathematics → JAM;NFD → Nachrichten für Dokumentation).
An article, preposition or conjunction is added, deleted or changed anywhere in the title (Annual report ofpipeline safety → Annual report on pipeline safety).
The name of the corporate body is added or deleted anywhere in the title (unless it represents a change in author/publisher) or the representation of it changes (i.e. full form changes to acronym or vice versa). Examples: Docket sheet → Docket sheet of the Supreme Court ; Anais … do CNI → Anais ; Variety’s on production → On production ; ONS newsletter → Newsletter ; Department of Forestry annual report → Forestry Department annual report ; Amalgamated Engineering Union monthly → AEU monthly.
Punctuation change (GBB → G.B.B.).
Order of titles listed in more than one language changes (South African medical journal = Suid Afrikaanse tydskrif vir gennesdunde → Suid Afrikaanse tydskrif vir gennesdunde = South African medical journal) **Note: if title chosen as 245a no longer appears on the list at all, consider it to be a title change.
Words linking title to the chronological designation are added (Tin → Tin in … )
Fluctuating titles: title changes back & forth frequently or lasts only a short duration (appears only on a few issues). This section is complex. Consult CONSER Cataloging Manual, Module 16.2.4 for more information – available online from the Cataloger's Desktop.
Words are added or deleted from a list, or the order of the words is changed as long as there is no significant change to subject matter. Again there are nuances – Consult CONSER Cataloging Manual, Module 16.2.4 – available online from the Cataloger's Desktop. Example: Kartboken for Oslo, Boerem, Lorenskog, Nesodden, Oppgard, Ski → Kartboken for Oslo, Boerem, Asker, Lorenskog, Nesodden, Oppgard, Ski.
Words that indicate type of resource are added or dropped anywhere in the title: bulletin, journal, magazine, review, study.
Words that are issue specific: inaugural, final, centennial, anniversary.
When a serial begins with a title page and cover, each having a different title, and subsequently drops the title page: make a new record. However, if the serial is cataloged from the cover and a title page (that has a different title) is added later, do not make a new record.
Order of corporate bodies changes.
