Assigning an OML Macro to a User Tool

Instead of assigning an OCLC Macro Language (OML) macro to a shortcut key, which can easily be forgotten without consistent use, another effective way of implementing OML macros are to assign them to user tools. The Connexion Client has a total of 10 user tools available. They are basically icons that can be placed on the Client's toolbar. With one click of a user tool, your macro is instantly launched upon the world to do whatever it's supposed to do.

Step 1: In the Tools menu, select User Tools, then select Assign. A dialog box will display as shown below.

Step 2: At the top of the dialog box is a section called "Display Commands for Category" which contains four choices (Character, Macro, Menu Item, Text). Choose Macro. You should now have a list of macros in the left panel. Pick the macro you want to assign a user tool to. To the right of the list of macros is a drop-down box labeled "Select New User Tool." Pick whichever one you want (most people just pick the first one), then click on the Assign Tool button. Your dialog box might look like the one below in which the macro IndexNote is being assigned to User Tool 1. Finally, click the Close button.

You can now run your macro by going to the Tools menu, selecting User Tools, and then selecting the number of the user tool you assigned to the macro. This seems tedious, doesn't it? There is a quicker way to access your user tool and that is by placing it on the toolbar.

Step 3: From the Tools menu, select Toolbar Editor. When the Toolbar Editor appears, scroll down (way down!) until you see icons that look like blue numbers as shown below.

Step 4: Click on the user tool you assigned your macro to. Hold down the mouse button and drag the item you highlighted to the last position in the toolbar. It should now appear on your toolbar. When you run your mouse over it, it will indicate what the user tool is assigned to. The figure below shows a toolbar with nine user tools.

To run your macro from the toolbar, just click on the user tool icon. This is probably the most simplest and effective way of running macros in the Connexion Client.
