Creating Text Macros Using a Quick Wizard

If the Macro Express Editor appears too complicated and all you need is a macro that types a simple string of text that you use over and over, consider using Macro Express' Quick Wizards to create your macro. Follow the steps in the example below.

Note: If you need a macro that needs to tab between fields while it outputs text, I would recommend using the Macro Express Editor, especially if your macro is intended for the Unicorn WorkFlows Java Client or the Symphony WorkFlows Client. See: Creating Text Macros Using the Macro Express Editor.

Example: The library has acquired 500 billion stars and each star is surprisingly accompanied by 12 planets and a bunch of asteroids and comets. Each star will be cataloged separately, but we will need to add a 300 subfield e to each record. It should look like this: " +|e12 planets + a bunch of asteroids and comets." Please note that there is a space before the first plus sign. This macro should save you 24.5 trillion keystrokes.

Step 1: Click on the Quick Wizards icon in the Actions panel on your left. It will look like the image below.

Step 2:
The next step is to choose the category of our macro. Since it will just output text, select Text as shown in the figure below. Then click the Next button.

Quick Wizards: Selecting Text

Step 3:
The next screen asks us to select from one of five text wizards. Choose "Type Text or Keystrokes" as shown in the figure below. Then click the Next button.

Step 4:
The next screen displays a summary of what this wizard is for as shown below. It will serve our purpose perfectly. Click the Next button to continue.

Step 5:
The next screen asks us for the text we want the macro to type for us. Type in " +|e12 planets + a bunch of asteroids and comets." as shown below. Please note that there is a space before the first plus sign. In the figure below, there are two buttons that may be of use. The Keystrokes button provides you with a list of additional keys to choose from, such as tab, backspace, enter, shift, etc. The Symbols button will display additional ASCII characters available to choose from, such as ¢, é, ö, £, å, æ, etc. We won't be needing any of these additional keystrokes for this macro, so continue by clicking the Next button.

Step 6:
The next screen asks us for the type of activation for our macro. Choose HotKey as shown below, then click on the Next button to continue.

Step 7:
The next step is to select our Hot Key. This is the key combination you will use to activate the macro. In the screen below, we chose Ctrl+P. Click on Next to continue.

Step 8:
Next, we will need to determine what programs we want this macro to work in. This is also known as the macro's scope. Choose "Play back in specific windows" as shown below, then click Next to continue.

Step 9:
The next screen notifies us that we currently have no windows selected yet, so click on the Select button shown below.

Quick Wizards: No Windows Selected

Step 10:
After clicking the Select button, a window will display showing all of the windows currently active on your computer. Select "SirsiDynix Symphony WorkFlows" from the list as shown below. If WorkFlows is currently not running on your computer, it will not show up in the list. If this is the case, you can type in "SirsiDynix Symphony WorkFlows" in the Selected Window(s) field at right.

Step 11:
When you selected the window title from the list, it appeared in the Selected Window(s) field at right. Next click on either Add button. Our selected window will show as below. Macro Express automatically defaults to have "Run If On Top" selected. This means our macro will only run if Symphony WorkFlows is the topmost window on our screen. This is exactly what we want. You may also select additional windows for your macro to run in at this point, but for this example, we only want it to run in Symphony WorkFlows, so click on the OK button.

Step 12:
After clicking on OK, the wizard returns us to the previous screen, except now it indicates that one window has been selected. You may select additional windows if you want at this point, but for this macro we only want it to run in one program, so click on the Next button.

Step 13:
The next step is to select a nickname for our macro. The nickname is basically a very brief description of what the macro does. This is an optional step, but to prevent confusion, it is recommended to give it some form of identification to differentiate it from other macros. In the figure below, we chose "Accompanying Planets Macro." Try to be brief and to the point when assigning a nickname.

After we have chosen our nickname, click the Finish button. Your macro will appear in your list of macros and is now available for immediate use.
