Logic and Structure of Heading Fields

The headings can be divided two ways to see the analogy between the indicators and subfields:

First Analogical Grouping (according to the function the heading performs in the record):

By function ...
Function Fields
Main entries (1XX): 100, 110, 111, *130
Added entries (7XX): 700, 710, 711, *730, 740
Subject headings (6XX): *600, *610, *611, *630, *650, *651
Series (4XX, 8XX): 440, 800, 810, 811, 830
Common elements: 2nd indicator (usually 0)

      * Not valid in MLP

 

Second Analogical Grouping (according to the type of heading):

By type ...
Type Fields
Personal name headings (X00): 100, 600, 700, 800
Corporate name headings (X10): 110, 610, 710, 810
Conference name headings (X11): 111, 611, 711, 811
Title headings (X4X): 240, 245, 246, 440, 740
Uniform title headings (X3X): *130, *630, *730, *830
Common elements: 1st indicator
All Subfields

      * Not valid in MLP
