COORDINATION AND COOPERATIVE INFORMATION

The selection of materials is coordinated by the Head, Schreyer Business Library and the three subject librarians. Overlap of collections occurs most often with the Social Sciences, Engineering, and Education and Behavioral Sciences libraries. The Heads of these subject libraries work together to ensure cooperative and collaborative collection development.

The University Libraries are members of several consortia, including the CIC (Committee for Institutional Cooperation – the Big 10) and PALCI (Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc.). Users of the University Libraries at Penn State University have access to collections of member libraries.

SUBJECT AND LANGUAGE MODIFIERS

English language or works translated into English are preferred over non-English language materials. Emphasis is on both U.S. and international business.

DESCRIPTION OF MATERIALS COLLECTED

The Schreyer Business Library collections include all of the following formats:

Electronic, particularly Web-Based Resources
Monographs
Journals & Other Serial Publications
Conference Proceedings
Government Publications
Bibliographies
Dictionaries and Handbooks
Encyclopedias
Directories
Yearbooks
Working Papers
Very select CD-ROM products when no other format is available

There is a core textbook collection that is supported through endowment funds. The Schreyer Business Library attempts to add publications of the faculty members in the units it supports. While the library does support microform collections, these are housed in the News and Microforms Library. Dissertations and theses from other colleges and universities are generally excluded.

Currency is important and the Schreyer Business Library is largely concerned with materials addressing current business practices, with the exception of the history of corporations and important historical business trends or people.

The Schreyer Business Library attempts to avoid duplication of resources in multiple formats, unless they are made available for free or very inexpensively. Format decisions should be made on the basis of cost, potential use, demand, and space and other resource requirements. When other factors are equal, the electronic version is preferable due to the increased potential for a variety of uses of the information and the potential for simultaneous use.

The Pennsylvania State University is one university geographically dispersed, with one administrative structure and uniform programs and services. The University Libraries are also a single entity within the University. The University Libraries will therefore not partition Web-based resources by location. All Web-based resources must be made available to all Penn State users throughout the system without regard to location.
