Encyclopedias and Books

Gale Virtual Reference Library: Includes full-text encyclopedias, almanacs, and specialized reference sources in a wide variety of subject fields.

Encyclopedia of International Media and Communications: Exhaustively explores the ways that editorial content--from journalism and scholarship to films and infomercials--is developed, presented, stored, analyzed, and regulated around the world.

International Encyclopedia of Communication: A comprehensive reference source for the field of communication. Spans the breadth of communication studies, including coverage of theories, media and communication phenomena, research methods, problems, concepts, and geographical areas. Entries range from extended explorations of major topics to short descriptions of key concepts.

The CAT: Online catalog of resources in the Penn State Libraries. Limit your search by resource material type, search all Penn State libraries or a single location, and electronically request resources that are not at the Brandywine Campus (Use the I WANT IT button).

 

Communication Studies Databases

Communication & Mass Media Complete: Incorporates CommSearch (formerly produced by the National Communication Association) and Mass Media Articles Index (formerly produced by Penn State) along with numerous other journals to create a research and reference resource of unprecedented scope and depth in the communication and mass media fields.

Sage Full-Text Journal Collections: Provides full-text of all journal published by Sage. Includes 40 major journals in the field of Communication and Media Studies.

To search the Sage Communication and Media Studies journals only, follow these steps:

  • On the SAGE JOURNALS ONLINE homepage, click on the blue arrow to select "Advanced Search by Discipline"
  • On the Advanced Search page, click in the circle in front of "Select from a List of Disciplines"
  • Click on the plus sign (+) in front of "Social Science & Humanities"
  • Place a check in the box in front of "COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA STUDIES"
  • Scroll to the top of the page and enter your Search Terms
  • Click on SEARCH to begin your search of Sage journals in the field of Communication and Media Studies

COMPANY/INDUSTRY PROFILES:

Hoover's: includes both public and private companies. Hoover's provides detailed Fact Sheets that include: company overview, history, people, products/operations, industry, competitors, news, and financials for over 13,000 U.S. and 2,0000 international companies. Includes both public and private companies.

Mergent Online:
includes detailed business descriptions, corporate histories, and financial statements on 11,000 U.S. public companies and 17,000 non-U.S. public companies.

Standard & Poors NetAdvantage: includes S&P Corporation Records, Register of Executives, & Directors, Investor’s Guide, Bond Guide, and Industry Surveys. Industry Surveys include an annual Basic Analysis, a short Current Analysis, and a Comparative Company Analysis.

ABI/INFORM Complete: includes more than 1,000 major business periodicals. TIP: Use “Classification Codes” to precisely target a search by topic, industry or market, geographical area, or document type.


Business Source Premier
: covers topics in virtually all areas of business and economics, with full text of more than 2,000 periodicals, including over 1,000 scholarly journals. Business Source Permier is the Libraries' single source of Harvard Business Review articles online.
