The Atlantic

  • a highly regarded American magazine that has set a standard for outstanding writing throughout its long publishing history, which spans more than 150 years. This magazine is not only read for its book reviews and literary critiques, but also for its commentary on the arts, current events, economics, food, news, politics, religion, science, and travel.**

Economist

  • one of the most read journals in the world, …it is well respected and authoritative for information on world politics, global business, finance and economics, science and technology, and the arts.**

Forbes

  • focuses on news and analysis that impact executives, managers, and investors. … a typical issue contains a cover story and numerous short articles, each analyzing economic trends or profiling industries, corporations, and key individuals.**

Fortune

  • less news-driven than Business Week, this title offers lengthier features that analyze major corporate and industry developments. It tends to cover smaller companies and more industry sectors than does Forbes. Emphasis is on investing and personal finance. Thus, articles inform the reader about general concepts and issues related to the economy, financial markets, and management. **   

Journal of Business Ethics

  • provides a public forum for discussion and debate about ethical issues related to business. …sections  handle business law, codes of ethics, corporate governance, gender issues, philosophic foundations, small business, teaching business ethics, and value-based management. **

MIT Sloan Management Review

  • with an editorial advisory board drawn from several top-tier business schools, notably business executives are a significant audience of this peer-reviewed publication. It presents content that "bridges the gap between management research and practice." … its emphasis is on leadership, strategy, innovation, and technology management. … an important publication for discovering current trends and innovations in management.** 

Monthly Labor Review

  • the official voice of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), its format features several in-depth articles by staff economists and program specialists, along with regular departments that review monthly labor data, describe current labor statistics, and offer lengthy book reviews.**

 Public Administration Review

  • published on behalf of the American Society for Public Administration,  covers public policy, administration, and management in the United States, with occasional articles dealing with other parts of the world. Geared toward practitioners as well as academics.**

Academy of Management Review

  • Academy of Management (AOM) title publishing research papers that contribute to management and organization theory.  Articles provide perspectives from a number of disciplines including psychology, sociology, economics, and the humanities.** 

Benefits Quarterly

  • aims to provide full-service news  for practitioners and students studying benefits and compensation. Articles offer a range of in-depth analyses of employee benefits issues and explore breaking trends and new developments, frequently including case studies or strategic suggestions for practitioners. The editors also analyze legislative developments and court rulings that affect compensation issues.**

  • each issue contains about a dozen articles, along with a short case study. …provides the current thinking of scholars and industry leaders on the topics of human resources management, manufacturing, strategic planning, globalization of markets, competitiveness, and related general business interests. Articles are highly regarded.**

 Industrial & Labor Relations Review

  • a preeminent scholarly publication in the field of industrial relations. Articles are quantitative, dense, and statistical… international in scope ...covers "all aspects of the employment relationship, including collective bargaining, labor law, labor markets, social security and protective labor legislation, management and personnel, human resources, worker participation, workplace health and safety, organizational behavior, comparative industrial relations, and labor history." … requires knowledge of statistics and economic theory to follow many of the articles.**

Business & Society Review

  • scholarly publication covers a wide range of ethical issues, corporate citizenship, and social responsibility. Articles are of interest to business people, academics, and others involved in the contemporary debate about the proper role of business in society.** 

Journal of Organizational Behavior

  • publishes empirical reports and theoretical reviews of research in organizational behavior and about the workplace. Topics include all levels: individual, group, and organization, as well as across levels. Articles may discuss personality, motivation, commitment, career behavior, leadership, politics, goal-setting, change management, decision making, turnover, or absenteeism.**

COMPANY/INDUSTRY PROFILES:

Hoover's: includes both public and private companies. Hoover's provides detailed Fact Sheets that include: company overview, history, people, products/operations, industry, competitors, news, and financials for over 13,000 U.S. and 2,0000 international companies. Includes both public and private companies.

Mergent Online:
includes detailed business descriptions, corporate histories, and financial statements on 11,000 U.S. public companies and 17,000 non-U.S. public companies.

Standard & Poors NetAdvantage: includes S&P Corporation Records, Register of Executives, & Directors, Investor’s Guide, Bond Guide, and Industry Surveys. Industry Surveys include an annual Basic Analysis, a short Current Analysis, and a Comparative Company Analysis.

BUSINESS NEWS, COMMENTARY, INTERVIEWS:

ABI/INFORM Complete: includes more than 1,000 major business periodicals. TIP: Use “Classification Codes” to precisely target a search by topic, industry or market, geographical area, or document type.

Business Source Premier: includes more than 2,000 business periodicals, in virtually all disciplines in business and economics.

Google Scholar

GOOGLE SCHOLAR (http://scholar.google.com) searches the web for scholarly literature across many disciplines and sources, including journal articles, books, theses, and technical reports.

  • Google Scholar searches are NOT as precise and comprehensive as subject database searches, but Google Scholar searches ARE often helpful for initial exploration of cross-disciplinary topics, verifying incomplete citations, and locating full text articles in Penn State Libraries' databases.
  • To identify Penn State Libraries' holding when searching Google Scholar from your personal computer, you have 2 options:

  1. Set your GOOGLE SCHOLAR PREFERENCES for Pennsylvania State University
    • Click on the link to "SCHOLAR PREFERENCES."
    •  In the LIBRARY LINKS type: Pennsylvania State University and click on FIND LIBRARY.
    •  When "Pennsylvania State University (Get it! @ Penn State)" appears, place a check in the box preceding it and click on SAVE PREFERENCES.
    • Now, if the Google Scholar search includes results that are available in Penn State full text databases, a link for "GET IT! @ Penn State" will appear.
    • Click on "GET IT! @ Penn State" to display full text from Penn State subscriptions.

  2. Connect to the LIAS-VPN (the Libraries' Virtual Private Network)
    • You may already have the Penn State VPN software on your computer if you use it to access the wireless Internet on campus. If not, download and install the VPN client software at http://downloads.its.psu.edu (select "Connecting to Penn State," then "VPN--Virtual Private Network").
    • To connect to the LIAS-VPN, open the VPN client (look for the program named "Cisco Systems VPN Client"). In the Connection Entry box, scroll to the bottom, select LIAS-VPN, then click "Connect." You will be prompted for your PSU Access Account ID and password. The LIAS-VPN will connect once you are authenticated.
    • Now, if the Google Scholar search includes results that are available in Penn State full text databases, a link for "GET IT! @ Penn State" will appear.
    • Click on "GET IT! @ Penn State" to display full text from Penn State subscriptions.
