Reference works are helpful at two points in your research: when starting out (by offering overview articles), or later when you encounter unfamiliar terms during your research.

Chronology of Twentieth-Century History. Ecology and the Environment. 2nd floor Paterno, Call # GE50.C56 1997. Essays on landmark events, cases, and people in the environmental movement. Entries are arranged by year and include a list of sources for further reading.

Gale Virtual Reference Library. Includes essays on environment topics including air pollution, national parks, oil spills, solar power, smog, and urban planning.

Environmental Resource Handbook. Life Sciences Library Reference Collection, 4th Floor Paterno. Call # TD169.6.E69 2005. A convenient compilation of facts, dates, and people.

Gov't Documents

The U.S. Government issues thousands of reports on legal, social, and political issues. Most are in the Social Sciences Library, 2nd Floor, Paterno. Some government documents appear in The CAT, others require specialized access tools.

Congressional Debates and Reports LexisNexis Congressional contains the debates on the floor of Congress, laws, hearings, and reports on legislation.  The CRS (Congressional Research Service) Reports provide helpful overviews of public policy issues.

Executive Branch Documents (Environmental Protection Agency, Dept. of Energy etc.) are often listed in The CAT. Search by topic, or agency. Search the President as AUTHOR in The CAT to find other documents.  Presidential Speeches and Documents are found in the Public Papers of the Presidents,and Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents, 1965-present in print; 1993-present ONLINE

Court Decisions and Laws are online via , Lexis Nexis Academic

Statistics the Government collects large quanitities of data.  To locate data by subject use our Statistics Guide

Google News Archives searches many newspaper titles. In some cases the full-text is available, but usually there is a fee. Ask for help locating a free copy in the library.

Scholarly Journals

America: History & Life (Articles published since 1954 in history journals)
Includes links to full-text journals found in the History Cooperative E-Journals, JSTOR, Periodicals Archive Online, Project MUSE and other full-text journals.

Business Source Premier  Covers business and marketing journals.  Good source for analysis of the auto and electrical industries.

Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management mostly focuses on the technical aspects of environmental science, with some coverage of politics and activism.

Google Scholar Covers *some*, but not all scholarly journals.  A convenient source, but not a replacement for searching library databases.

International Index to Black Periodicals Full Text Use to find articles on African-Americans and the environmental movement.

Periodicals Index Online  An index to scholarly sources in many subject area.  Especially useful for earlier scholarship not covered in other online databases.

Sociological Abstracts Use to find articles written primarly from a sociological perspective.

Worldwide Political Science Abstracts Covers political groups and political aspects of the environmental movements.

Women's Studies International Use to find scholarship on women and the environmental movement.
