Late 20th Century News and Magazine Databases

Dates vary but most content is after 1975.

Google News Archives searches many newspaper titles. In some cases the full text is available, but usually there is a fee. Ask for help locating a free copy in the library.

A FEW 20th Century Magazines are being scanned in as part of the Google Books Project. Includes some years of African-American titles such as Jet and Ebony.

  • Chicano Periodicals Index. Articles in Chicano publications from 1967-1987, Call # Z1361.M4 C7, Arts & Humanities Reference, 2nd Floor Pattee.
  • Hampton University Peabody Newspaper Clipping File (1873-1940, focus on years from 1900 to 1925) Call # MICRO 4 HAMP, News & Microforms, Ground Floor, West Pattee. For articles on specific topics consult the printed guide, Call # CD3569.H364H36.
  • Index to Periodical Articles by and About Blacks.  Call # Z1361.N39 I6, Arts & Humanities Reference, 2nd Floor Pattee Covers articles in African-American publications back to 1950. 
  • Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, Arts & Hum. Indexes, 2nd Floor Pattee. An index to articles in over 200 American magazines since 1890. 
  • Right Wing Collection of the University of Iowa Libraries, 1918-1977.  Call # FILM D289, News & Microforms, Ground Floor, West Pattee. Search The CAT for a list of titles or use the collection guide (Call # Z7163.I7). 
  • Tuskegee Institute News Clippings File (most content from 1910-1966).  Call # A401, News & Microforms, Ground Floor, West Pattee. To identify articles by topic use the guide, Call # Z1361.N39 K58.

Primary Sources on the Web

There are many websites with primary source documents on Southern History. Southern Spaces has a list of some of the substantial projects. Take advantage of geography. The site "Repositories of Primary Sources" lists libraries by city/state. Many have digital collections about their regions.

Gov't Documents

Congressional Debates appear in the Congressional Record, 1874 - present. Available in electronic format in HeinOnline. Search for the title "Congressional Record" and click on the results to search within the Congressional Record. Print copies are in the Social Sciences Library, 2nd Floor Paterno.

Lexis-Nexis Congressional Universe search for Congressional documents including committee hearings and reports. Inlcudes the full-text of many documents. Copies of most Congressional publications are in the Social Sciences Library, 2nd Floor Paterno.

Declassified Documents Reference System. Texts of formerly classified government documents.

Presidential Speeches and Documents can be found in the Public Papers of the Presidents and Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents, 1965 to present in print; 1993 to present online.  Many early presidential messages and addresses are included in the Serial Set (see Congressional Universe above).

Court Decisions and Laws are online via Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe.

Journals

Provides full text of selected academic journals. Check each database to see the titles they include and the years.

Books
