19th and early 20th Century Sources Online

American Periodicals Series, 1741-1900+ - 1,000+ magazines up to around 1930. A good source for the early history of the automobile industry.

American Periodicals from the Center for Research Libraries - Digitized journals from the nineteenth to the early 20th century. A good source for early trade magazines focusing on the technical and scientific aspects of automobiles.

America's Historical Newspapers, 1690-1922 - A selection of papers from around the U.S. Good for local flavor.

Business Source Premier - Covers business and marketing journals, some back to the early 20th century.

Chicago Tribune Historical (1849-1986)

Google Magazines - Full-color magazines, including Life Magazine, and selected years of other popular magazines.

Google News Archive - Contains a mix of free and "pay per view" historical news sources.

ICON: Newspaper Digitization Projects - A helpful list of digital newspapers by state.

New York Times Digital Archive, 1851-

Nineteenth Century U.S. Newspapers

Reader's Guide Retrospective, 1890-1982 - An index to popular U.S. magazines. The best source for the period from roughly 1910 to 1980.

Access World News - U.S. and international news sources back to the 1980s

Ethnic Newswatch - African-American, Hispanic-American, and other news sources

Lexis Nexis Academic - Full-text news sources, some back to the early 1980's

Vanderbilt Television News Archive (1968-present)

Gov't Publications

The U.S. Government issues thousands of reports on legal, social, and political issues. Most are in the Social Sciences Library, 2nd Floor, Paterno. Most government documents appear in The CAT, though some require specialized access tools.

Congressional Reports and Debates: Congressional (ProQuest) - Contains the debates on the floor of Congress, laws, hearings, and reports on legislation.

Executive Branch Documents (Dept. Office, etc.) are often listed in The CAT. Search by topic, or agency. Search the President as Author in The CAT to find other documents. Many early Presidential messages and addresses are included in The Serial Set.

Court Decisions and Laws are online via Lexis Nexis Academic. Laws from 1789 are also in U.S. Statutes at Large , Call #, KF50.A3, Legal Alcove, Social Sciences Library, 2nd Floor Paterno

Scholarly Articles

America: History & Life - Articles published since 1954 in history journals
Includes links to full-text journals found in the History Cooperative E-Journals, JSTOR, Periodicals Archive Online, and Project MUSE

Business Source Premier - Covers business and marketing journals, some back to the early 20th century

Google Scholar - Covers some, but not all, scholarly journals. A convenient source, but not a replacement for searching the Libraries' databases.

HAPI: Hispanic American Periodicals Index

International Index to Black Periodicals Full Text

Periodicals Index Online - An index to scholarly sources in many subject areas. Especially useful for older scholarship not covered in other online databases.

PsycINFO - Use to find articles focusing on the psychological aspects of a topic.

Sociological Abstracts - Use to find articles written primarily from a sociological perspective.
