General Resources

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration is an excellent source for information on all types of energy.   With information organized by both country and resource type, it is key resource.

The International Energy Agency provides statistics by commodity and country.  Graphs, maps and data are available for downloading.

BP’s Statistical Review of World Energy provides current and historical information on prices, production and consumption of various types of energy, including oil.  Slides are downloadable.

The OPEC website provides informative reports and data.

Global Issues in Context is a useful tool to locate information with an international perspective.

CQ Researcher contains reports providing overviews of major policy issues.  The reports are designed to provide a full briefing on the topic from background, pros/cons, maps/charts, and links to relevant resources.  One of the more recent reports concerns fracking; another concerns the future of the Gulf States.

The Environment and Energy Newswires provide access to current policy news related to the energy industry.

The Business Reference Service of the Library of Congress produced this overview report on The Oil & Gas Industry in 2006. If has many useful links to the history and development of the industry.

Finally, use LionSearch to locate information sources for specific topics related to your report.  If you are not finding sufficient information, try alternate terminology.  For example, search for both “oil” and “petroleum”.  (Watch a brief video demo of finding oil industry resources in LionSearch.)

Countries, Companies and Other Organizations

First, be sure to visit the Energy Information Administration website for energy-related country information.

The Countries of the World and their Leaders is available online in the Nation and World section of the Gale Virtual Reference Library.   This tool can be used to research information on the role of oil in the economy of individual countries.

Political Risk Yearbook is an excellent source of information  on current economic and political situations by country.  Also useful is the section in each report on ‘players to watch’.

PolicyFile provides reports and perspectives from think tanks and other organizations.

Business Source Premier is a good source to use to locate information about country leaders, CEOs and other corporate information.

For more tools, see the research guide for International Business or International Affairs.

See also the research guides for Company Information or International Economics.

Environmental Aspects and Accidents

Environmental Aspects and Accidents

The Global Reference on Environment, Energy and Natural Resources (GREENR)  database provides selected fulltext resources on the intersection of energy and the environment.  Materials include magazine articles, podcasts, images, and more.

The Gale Virtual Reference Library provides access to the fulltext of various encyclopedias and reference works.  For example, a search for “oil spills” will result in entries from an environmental encyclopedia, a disasters reference book, and others.

The International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation maintains a database of accidental oil spills from tankers, combined carriers and barges since 1970.  The data includes the type of oil spilt, the spill amount, the cause and location of the incident and the vessel involved. The site also includes summaries of major oil spill events, such as the Exxon Valdez, from 1967 to date.

The National Transportation Safety Board provides information on pipeline accidents in the U.S.

The Environmental Protection Agency is also involved in oil spill prevention and control in the U.S.  A general search of their website results in links to reports on the BP oil spill and other resources.

Technical Aspects

Technical Information

The two major sources for information on technological developments in the oil industry are:

COMPENDEX – the major index to the literature of engineering.

OnePetro – a fulltext database of papers published by the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

LionSearch will also provide links to many useful resources.
