Use The CAT for finding books owned by Penn State.

Go to the Browse function if you are looking for a specific title or author (type last name first).

Go to the Keyword function and combine terms to search on a topic then use the subject headings from relevant books for additional search terms.

Write down the call number and location for any book you want.

For electronic books, click the words "online content" to access the full text.

Search the name of your disorder.  Once you find an appropriate book, click on the Detailed Information tab and look at the subjects listed at the bottom of the page to determine the official subjects assigned to the book.  Click on those that seem useful.

Subject Databases

  • Pubmed the largest biomedical database in the world
  • PsychInfo psychology and related disciplines
  • ERIC education
  • OTBibSys occupational therapy and rehabilitation
  • SportDiscus physiology and biomechanics

Other Databases

  • Dissertation and Theses - dissertations from most US, and some foreign, institutions.
  • Web of Science - all subjects, plus search for new articles which cite an older article by using the "cited ref" search mode.

Article Types

Be sure to highlight more credible information in your project.  

  • Review Articles provides a summary and synthesis of the research on a particular subject.  They should include critical assessment of the works cited, explanations of conflicts in the literature, and analysis of the field.
  • Research Articles present data developed from a controlled experiment. 
  • Case Reports describe one or two specific instances of a particular treatment or disease presentation.
  • Personal Accounts or "anecdotal evidence," refer to individual experiences. They may or may not be consistent with scientific research.

Other Resources

  • Theses should include expermental scholarly information.
  • Poster Sessions are often expermental data presented at a conference and are often later turned into research papers.
  • Popular Articles or News Articles are a journalist's interpretation of any of the above sources.
