Think of this as Google for the Penn State Libraries' resources. Use keywords to cross-search a wide selection of library databases and the Penn State Libraries' online catalog [The CAT] in one search. While LionSearch DOES NOT cross-search all Libraries' databases, but it is a great place to start and you will find some good scholarly resources.
The CAT — the online catalog of materials owned by Penn State Libraries. All formats (books, journals, audiovisuals, maps, recordings, etc.) are included.
WorldCat — online catalog of materials at thousands of libraries around the country. Materials not owned by Penn State can be requested via Interlibrary Loan.
International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences — online full-text database
Gale Virtual Reference Library — an online collection of subject-specific encyclopedias, including the Encyclopedia of Sociology (Macmillan Reference)
Criminal Justice Abstracts — a scholarly database for research articles and book chapters.
ProQuest — an excellent general resource for articles.
PsycINFO — a scholarly database for research articles and book chapters.
Sociological Abstracts — a scholarly database for research articles and book chapters.
Annual Reviews — an extensive collection of critical reviews of research in each of the disciplines written by leading scientists.
Social Sciences Citation Index [via Web of Science] — a useful tool for finding articles that are cited by a particular author.
JSTOR — scholarly journal archive. Does not contain the most current research.
Google Scholar — a great resource for cross-disciplinary searching. Use caution with subject headings and citation counts. [Remember to change Scholar Preferences. ]
Statistical Abstracts of the United States — published annually since 1878, this is the authoritative and comprehensive summary of statistics on the social, political, and economic organization of the United States. Also available: Statistical Abstracts of the United States online via the U.S. Census Bureau
Historical Statistics of the United States — comprehensive compendium of statistics over time from over 1,000 sources recording every aspect of the history of the United States. Available online: Historical Statistics of the United States, Millennial Edition
Statistical Insight [ProQuest] — search for statistical tables published by the federal government (ASI), state agencies and companies (SRI), or international and inter-governmental agencies (IIS).
Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) — the world's largest archive of computerized social science data. Data can be downloaded to the user's desktop.
iPOLL — provides statistics (frequencies rates) from questions in public opinion polls from academic, commercial, and media survey organizations since 1935. Data sets are also available from many of the questions, but not all of them.
Sociometrics Social Science Electronic Data Library (SSEDL) — consists of eight topically-focused data archives and an online data analysis system.
SodaPop (Simple Online Data Archive for Population Studies) — is a web-based system that allows users to extract data and view codebooks and other documentation online.
Choose Scholar Preferences on the Google Scholar default search page.
In the Library Links section, enter Pennsylvania State University into the search box and click the Find Library button.
To see results from Penn State Libraries-subscribed databases, click the boxes for:
Click the Save Preferences button.
Now, if the Google Scholar search includes results that are available in Penn State Libraries' full text databases, a link for Get it!@Penn State will appear.
Click on the Get it!@Penn State button to display full text from Penn State Libraries' subscriptions.
