Enhancing Student Life

A growing concept among top academic libraries is the development of a "Knowledge Commons." This common area reflects the contemporary university library as an intellectual hub that serves a variety of purposes for students and faculty - as a place of quiet study, social interaction, scholarly discourse, teamwork, and integration of technology with content and learning.

At Penn State, the Commons will be a result of partnerships between the University Libraries, Information Technology Services, the Learning Centers, and Media and Technology Support Services.

But the Knowledge Commons is just a beginning. Enhancing student-centered activities are integral to the learning center concept. Others areas that will enhance student life are:

  • Purchase of Art for the Libraries*
  • Distinguished speaker series that include authors, artists, and other professionals
  • Development of innovative learning environments
  • Development of traveling exhibits

*Surveys have documented that students are exposed to more art in the Libraries than in museums.
