About this index:

This index to the maps of abandoned mines in Pennsylvania is intended to help in the identification and location of existing mine maps. The index was created in 1998 and represents over 11,000 abandoned mine maps available in repositories throughout the Commonwealth.

Obtaining a map:

To see or obtain a copy of these maps, you should contact the PA Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Mine Safety, the National Mine Map Repository in Pittsburgh, or the Pennsylvania Geological Survey.

Field Code	Definition	For more information:
UTM	Location in UTM coordinates	USGS fact sheet about the UTM coordinate system.
County FIPS	County code (numeric)	Use the U.S. Census’ FIPS County Lookup to determine the FIPS code.
County name	County name	Map of PA counties from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Quad Name	7.5 minute topographic quadrangle name	Use the Geographic Names Information System to look up a quadrangle name. Use this Quadrangle Index Map to zoom to map names.
Document Number	National Mine Map Repository ID	National Mine Map Repository site. The document number used by the NMMR is not unique.
Mine Name
Mine Type		Underground, surface, combination, or unknown.
Company	Name of company that operated the mine
Mine Seam Code 1 and 2	Numeric identifier for the coal seam	Usually only one value is shown but there could be two values in cases where more than one seam is described on the map. “UNK” means the seam type is unknown.
Mine Seam Name 1 and 2	Name of the coal seam.	Coal in Pennsylvania (p.20-28) contains descriptions of the major PA coal seams. “UNK” means the seam type is unknown. Usually only one value is shown but there could be two values in cases where more than one seam is described on the map.
Source	Source of the mine map
Commodity code	Numeric ID for the commodity being mined
Commodity name	Name of the resource being mined
Year	Date of the map	A “0” means the date of the map is unknown.
Classified		Describes whether the map has access restrictions or not.
Frames		Number of frames of microfilm for this map.
