1. The Penn State DuBois Campus Library Course Reserve shelves are designated for the housing of course material and are intended to give students easy access to supplemental materials for a specific course.
2. Items placed on reserve may be checked out for only a short period of time, usually 2 hours and for in-library use only, ensuring that all students in a course have an opportunity to view materials. Other periods of time are available at an instructor's request.
3. Loan period decisions are at the discretion of the instructor and can only be changed by the instructor.
4. Materials placed on reserve are usually Penn State Library materials or an instructor's personal items. These items can include, but are not limited to, books, articles, class notes and media. Electronic reserves may be created from portions of books, full-text articles and other materials.
5. Reserves are processed on a first come, first serve basis. To provide ample time to process materials, the Library staff has up to three business days to place requested materials on reserve.
6. Materials relevant to the Penn State DuBois faculty and staff (i.e. strategic plans, proposals, reports, candidate vitae) may also be placed on reserve.
7. Library materials that do not normally circulate cannot be placed on reserve unless agreed upon by the instructor and librarian.
8. Reference material is generally not available for course reserve. In special circumstances, reference material may be placed on reserve with permission by the librarian.
9. Before submitting an article for reserve, instructors are encouraged to see if the item is available full text in one of the Library's databases. If the item is full text, the Library can provide an electronic copy for students to access via the "Course Reserves" icon in the "Quick Links" section of the University Libraries home page (http://www.libraries.psu.edu).
10. The Library is not responsible for the loss, replacement or damage of personal items placed on reserve for use by students.
11. Materials placed on reserve must meet the "fair use" criteria listed in Title 17, section 107 of the U.S. Code (http://www.loc.gov/copyright/circs/circ21.pdf) or the user must receive permission from the copyright holder to use copyrighted material for instructional purposes. The Library reserves the right to refuse any materials for reserve if it is suspected that the material violates copyright law.
12. At the end of each semester, personal items on reserve are returned to faculty mailboxes. If the items are too large for the mailboxes, a memo will be sent asking faculty to pick up their materials from the Library as soon as possible. Instructor's personal reserve materials are never stored in the Library when not in use.
13. At the end of each semester, Penn State Library materials are discharged and returned to their locations. Electronic reserves become "inactive".
