Research Assistance
The Campus Library has a dedicated and knowledgeable staff to help students and faculty find material for their projects and research. We will lend assistance in using the library collection and article Databases. The librarians are available during normal working hours or by special appointments. If you have a question or research need, please stop in the library and see one of the librarians.
Reference Collection
The DuBois Library maintains a general reference collection to support the curricula of the campus. Included in the collection are general and specialized encyclopedias, statistical resources, dictionaries, almanacs, atlases, handbooks and indexes.
Using a reference resource like an encyclopedia or handbook is an excellent way to begin your research. Taking a few minutes to read about your topic in a specialized reference book can help you define unfamiliar terms, locate quick biographical information, and verify dates and events. Click here for a selection of encyclopedias and other reference books that are available at either the Penn State DuBois Campus Library or online through the Penn State system.
Search for Books
The online catalog , or The CAT, is the system used to locate books and other materials owned by the university libraries. Items not at DuBois may be requested from other Penn State locations. The library catalog can be accessed from any computer with Internet access and searches a collection of nearly 5 million items.
Research Databases
Penn State Libraries subscribe to many electronic periodical databases that are available to students, faculty and staff. These databases provide full-text access to articles in scholarly journals and popular magazines.
If you're just getting started on your research, check out the "Try These First" resources. If your research is more advanced, consult the "Databases by Subject" page for information on databases covering periodicals in business, HDFS, education, wildlife, literature, health sciences, and controversial issues.
Interlibrary Loan
Penn State DuBois students, faculty, and staff have access to all Penn State Library items, as well as materials at other libraries through ILLiad, the University Libraries' interlibrary loan system. For more information on InterLibrary Loan, go to the Penn State DuBois InterLibrary Loan page.
Course Reserves
Reserve items faculty select for specific classes are shelved at the Circulation desk. Most items are loaned for 2 hours to be used within the Library. Be prepared to give the course number and name of your instructor. In order to borrow reserve materials, students must be registered with the library and present a Penn State ID.
Electronic Reserves (E-Reserves) are photocopied materials available through The CAT, and can be accessed 24 hours a day from any computer with Internet Access.
To see whether an instructor has placed materials on reserve, go to the Course Reserves Lookup and login. Enter your search term (you can search by instructor, course name, or course number) and click on the search type. The list of materials for your instructor or class will appear.
For questions about Course Reserves, call the library at 814-375-4756.
Newspapers & Periodicals
The library subscribes to the Centre Daily Times, the Courier Express, the Daily Collegian, the Jefferson Democrat, the Progress, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal. Some newspapers are available full-text on-line.
The library maintains subscriptions and back files for approximately 150 magazines and journals. Articles from periodicals not owned on campus are often available full-text through one of our many databases.
Check the E-Journal List for specific titles.
ILLiad can be used to request copies of articles not available at the Penn State DuBois Library.
Photocopies
The Campus Library has a coin operated Xerox for making copies 8 1/2 x 11, or 8 1/2 x 14 . Cost for either size is $.10.
