Sections in the Education and Behavioral Sciences Library

1.      Current Periodicals—primarily academic journals but includes children’s magazines

2.      Curriculum Room w/Educational Kits, Video’s, DVD’s

3.      L Call Numbers—Education Titles

4.      BF Call Numbers—Psychology Titles

5.      Education Reference

6.      PN1009’s (Study of Children’s Literature) and Z1037’s (Bibliographic Information)—Books about children’s books

7.      Education Historical—Historical children’s literature titles

8.      Juvenile—Includes Nonfiction (Information Books, Biographies, Autobiographies), Mythology, Folklore, Fairytales, Nursery Rhymes, Poetry, Graphic Novels (Call Number PZ 7.7 or PN6727)

9.      There are NO PZ 7’s in the Juvenile Fiction Section (All PZ 7 call numbers have been divided into two other fiction categories in the Education Library—Picture Book section or Education Juvenile Fiction section)

a.      Picture Books—Arranged Alphabetically  according to the author’s last name

b.      Education Juvenile Fiction—Young Adult Fiction and Fiction Chapter Books—Arranged alphabetically according to the author’s last name

Tips for using the CAT located on the Penn State Libraries Homepage: http://www.libraries.psu.edu/psul.html

1.      Click on the CAT, Use the Advanced Search

2.      Limit the search to: Pattee Library & Paterno Library (UP);  

3.      Choose the Material Type:  Juvenile Books

4.      Search according to author and/or title if known

5.      Always click on details in the record to find the book’s designation and  location

6.      What does the record say? Very important for determining which section of the Education Library the book can be found.  Juvenile, Picture Books, Education Juvenile Fiction, Instructional Materials

7.      Award books—Use Keywords, search: Newbery (awarded for best writing); search: Caldecott (awarded for best pictures); search: Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award

8.      Alphabet Books, Nursery Rhymes—Use Keywords (search: Alphabet—Call number PE1155; search: Nursery Rhymes or search: Mother Goose—Call number PZ 8.3)

9.       European and NonEuropean Folklore—Use LC Subject Heading Search

a. For NonEuropean (Search Folklore and a particular country or continent not in Europe [eg. Africa, Japan, China, Korea, Greece, North America, Mexico, United States])—search: Folklore Japan

b. For European (Search Folklore and a specific European country [eg. Germany, France, England, Ireland, Spain, Italy])—search: Folklore Germany

10.  Myths—Use Keywords, search: Myth$ (The $ sign acts as a “wildcard” and brings up versions of word that have Myth as a root word—Myths, Mythology, Mythical, Mythological etc.) (Call number BL)

11.  Fables—Use Keywords or LC Subject Heading, search: Fables (Call Number PZ 8.2)

12.   Graphic Novels—Use Keywords or LC Subject Heading, search: Graphic Novels (Call numbers PN 6727 or PZ 7.7; some are also located in Fiction and Picture Books)

13.  Predictable Books—Use the following two websites to get title ideas and to understand what constitutes a predictable book:

14.  Biographies/Autobiographies—Use a keywords, title or author search to look for famous people—for e.g. children’s book authors and illustrators, sports figures, etc.

Review Sources for Professionally Recommended Titles

At Start Here on the Penn State Libraries Homepage, click Databases: http://www.libraries.psu.edu/psul.html

1.      Click on the “C”—Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database [Green dot—one or more reviews are present/orange dot—includes curriculum connections)

2.       Click on the “H”—Hornbook Guide Online—(Rating System, 1-6, 1 being the best).

3.      Also Print Review Sources are available –starred reviews—(e.g. Booklist; The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books; Hornbook; School Library Journal).

Assignment:

1.      Use a computer. Look up a book you remember from your childhood in the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) or Hornbook Guide Online

(a). Name of the Book _________________________ (b). Author __________________

(c). Look at the reviews for the book. Are they generally positive or negative? If using the

       Hornbook Guide Online, what is the rating? _______ (Numbers 1-6; 1 is best)

(d). What source did the review come from? _____________________________

2.      Go to the CAT and look the book up with either the title or the author as your search term.

a.      Write down the call number ___________________________

b.      Make sure to check the details on the CAT Record. Circle the section of the library the book can be found in.
