Limiting Search Results

Once initial search results are retrieved, it is often useful to limit those results. The most common "limit" commands are "by date," "by language," or "by publication type." How to limit your searches will vary from database to database. Fortunately most databases contain a "help" section that explains how to use that system's search features. It is always a good idea to read such instructions before attempting your search (or when trying to refine a search), so look for the "help" button or "search tips" link on the search screen.

You should also take advantage of advanced search features when they they are available. For example:

• a thesaurus embedded in the database is a great advantage in selecting the most appropriate search terms that apply to your topic
• a "search history" feature allows you to display and re-combine search statements you have already used
• a "save search" feature lets you save a search with a password, and then later recreate that same search to re-execute, modify, or update.

Other systems may have additional features. Read the help screens to become very familiar with database capabilities.
