ERIC is considered to be the primary database for education literature. Available since 1966, it is accessible two ways:
ERIC indexes two types of literature:
- Journal articles [“EJ” numbers]
- almost 900 journal titles are included. See journal list here.
- To Find Journals: Use
button to determine full text status or other availability.
- ERIC documents [“ED” numbers]
- Non-journal publications such as conference papers, technical and policy reports, publications of scholarly / professional associations, research / policy organizations, federal, state and local agencies, and more. Lesson plans were discontinued after 2003. Peer-reviewed since 2004; not peer-reviewed 2003 and earlier.

- ED numbers that have been digitized [i.e. full text electronic image] are listed here.
- ERIC Documents [ED’s] that have not been digitized may be available on microfiche (through 2004]. These can be requested by the 6 digit “ED” number at the following locations, or via Interlibrary Loan.

- Microfiche printers/viewers/scanners are available at the Harrisburg Library.
- If you cannot locate the digitized full-text copy:
- View the full record provided by the database for additional URLs or access information, to follow leads to publishers, agencies, organizations, authors, etc.
- Try author search in Google Scholar or CAT or WorldCAT. ERIC Documents [ED’s] are sometimes published as full works with a different title, or in another format.
- if you identify an alternative source that we do not own, submit an ILL request.
Note: Records with note "Document not available from EDRS” or indicated as “Level 3” are not, and have never been, available at all through the ERIC collections.
