New content in JSTOR digital archive

Among the new journals available via the JSTOR digital archive are:

Africa Today, Vol. 1, No. 1 (April, 1954) – Vol. 49, No. 4 (Winter, 2002) [5 year moving wall] and The Journal of Developing Areas, Vol. 1, No. 1 (October, 1966) – Vol. 37, No. 1 (Autumn, 2003) [4 year moving wall]. 

Other titles include Financial Analysts Journal, Iran, The J. Paul Getty Museum Journal

ACM Digital Library records added to The CAT

Over 900 records for individual titles in the ACM Digital Library have been added to The CAT. The ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), founded in 1947, is the largest and oldest international scientific and industrial computer society. Through its many Special Interest Groups, the ACM fosters research and communication in a broad range of computing areas.
A Keywords Anywhere search on "ACM Digital Library" will retrieve the records. Questions about the collection can be directed to Tom Conkling (twc1@psulias.psu.edu).

Knovel records added to The CAT

Over 1,100 records for individual titles in the Knovel database have been added to The CAT. The Knovel database provides online access to handbooks and current reference works in the field of engineering. Subjects covered include Electrochemical power, Corrosion, Ceramics, Nuclear energy, Process design and control, Thermodynamics, Fluid dynamics, Organic, Inorganic, Nuclear and Analytical chemistry, Polymer technology, Surface technology, and Materials science.
A Keywords Anywhere search on "Knovel (Firm)" will retrieve the records.

CQ Global Researcher

CQ Global Researcher provides students with definitive, in-depth coverage of global affairs from a number of international viewpoints.  Each single-themed, 12,000-word CQ Global Researcher report is researched and written by an experienced observer of the given issue. CQ Almanac

Supreme Court Yearbook

The Supreme Court Yearbook has provided valuable in-depth coverage and analysis of every decision from the nation's highest court from 1989-1990. 

Digital National Security Archive

The database includes more than 63,000 of the most important declassified documents regarding critical U.S. policy decisions.

Ignacio Sanchez has joined the EMS Library as the new library supervisor. Welcome Ignacio!

RefWorks bibliographic management software

Penn State has purchased RefWorks, a citation software and bibliographic management tool with some features similar to EndNote or Zotero. It is Web-based and can be used from any location.

Pennsylvania Geology digital collection

The library's collection of digital geologic maps are being merged into the Pennsylvania Geology digital collection. Maps will be available for downloading in a variety of formats including JPEG and the original TIFF.

Library closing early on Wednesday August 13

Due to a planned power outage to install a transformer, the EMS Library will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13.

Goldsmiths'-Kress library of economic literature, Segment II (1801-1850) records added to The CAT

Over 28,000 records for individual titles in Segment II of the microfilm collection Goldsmiths'-Kress library of economic literature have been added to The CAT. The complete collection exhaustively documents the fundamentals of Western economic philosophy and business theory from the last half of the 15th century to 1850. Comprising material in more than 10 European languages, this collection of "economic" literature in fact covers political and social history as well. The subjects represented include commerce, slavery, social conditions, colonialism, Chartism, technological advances, demography, political theory, and Irish-English relations.
A Begins With (Browse) search of Series or Title with the string "Goldsmiths'-Kress library of economic literature" will retrieve the records.

Springer E-Book records in the CAT

Over 9000 records for Springer electronic books have been added to the Libraries' catalog. Publishing over 3,500 new titles annually, Springer is one of the world's leading sources for scientific, technical and medical monographs. The Libraries' collection includes titles from 2005 to date. A keyword search of "SpringerLink" will retrieve the records.

Literature Online collection added

Over 18,000 records for individual titles in the Literature Online collection have been added to The CAT. Literature Online is a virtual library containing over 350,000 literary texts as well as full-text journals, author biographies and other critical and reference resources. Included in the collection are over 800 Poets on Screen filmed poetry readings, key reference works such as The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms and The Encyclopedia of Post-Colonial Literatures in English, and biographies for 4,000 of the most widely studied authors.

Personel changes at EMSL

Dr. Robert Tolliver has joined the EMS Library as the earth sciences specialist. He hails most recently from the University of Michigan; He received his doctorate in geology from the University of Tennessee and a MLIS from the University of South Carolina.
Long time library manager, Jill Roland, retired from Penn State at the end of June. Jill first began working for Penn State in 1969. She looks forward to spending time with her grandchildren and her garden. Best wishes Jill!

Article delivery service for staff

A free article delivery service is now available to Penn State staff. Staff can request that articles from print journals at the Penn State libraries be scanned and delivered electronically. Starting Monday July 7th, when staff login to ILLIAD, the Libraries' interlibrary loan software, they will see an announcement of the new service.

Electrochemical Society Digital Library access acquired

I'm pleased to report that we have been about to acquire access to the digital library of materials from the Electrochemical Society. We now have access to not only the Journal of the Electrochemical Society but also ECS Transactions, Interface, and Electrochemical and Solid-State Letters.

Library hours to change for summer

The EMS Library will be open until 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday. We will close at 5 p.m. on Fridays. Saturday we are open from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sundays we open at 1 p.m. and close at 9 p.m. These hours will apply through August 15.

World Bank e-Library records added to The CAT

Over 1,800 records for individual titles in the World Bank e-Library have been added to The CAT. An extensive collection in the area of social and economic development, the World Bank e-Library includes works on agriculture and rural development, banking, finance, current affairs, data publication, development economics, education and training, energy, industry, mining, environment, pollution prevention, gender, health, water supply, poverty, technology, and globalization.A Browse search (i.e., begins with) of series or title with the string "World Bank e-Library" will retrieve the records.

ISI's Journal Citation Reports available

We now have access to JCR - Journal Citation Reports, which reports the impact factor of journals indexed by ISI (the publisher of Web of Science).

Nature Archive complete.

The complete backfile of the journal Nature is now available to researchers. Nature, a premier scientific journal, began publication in 1869.

RefWorks Pilot

The Libraries has arranged for access to the bibliographic software, RefWorks, through June, for the Penn State community. Please give it a try and let us know what you think.

AGU backfiles increased

We now have access to more of the AGU journal backfiles. As AGU scans their older journals, they will become available to Penn State users. Currently AGU has scanned Journal of Geophysical Research back to v.54 1949. Reviews of Geophysics is available from v.1 1963 to date. Titles and issues may be browsed at the AGU digital library webpage.

Digital Newspaper Collections Acquired

As part of a CIC initiative, the Libraries has purchased online access to the British Newspapers 1600-1900 collection and Nineteenth Century U.S. Newspapers collection. Along with the America's Historical Newspapers collection, we now have extensive retrospective coverage of English-language news sources.

Springer E-Books Available

As part of a CIC initiative, the Libraries has purchased online access to books publisher by Springer from 2005-2010. The titles are accessible via the SpringerLink website. Some books distributed by Springer will not be included. Also excluded are German language publications, International Tables for Crystallography, book series Landolt Bornstein, and Methods titles (Methods in Molecular Biology, Molecular Medicine, Biotechnology, Pharmacology, and Toxicology).

Faculty Photocopy Service

The Libraries now offers a free service to deliver articles to faculty members' desktops for materials owned by Penn State. The service uses ILLIAD, the interlibrary loan software. There is now a link in ILLIAD to "Request items owned by Penn State".

Science Rejoins JSTOR

The AAAS, publisher of Science, has reached an agreement with JSTOR to continue to make the backfiles of Science (through 2002) available to current and future JSTOR members.
